Retirement plan announced by SWID treasurer after decade of service

M. Allen Johnston, treasurer for the Shafter Wasco Irrigation District since 1946, said he will retire March 1 1957 and move to Houston to be near his daughter. Free Immunization Clinic Next Thursday in Shafter

County Health officer announces a free immunization clinic for diphtheria and tetanus at the county building in Shafter on Thursday, December 13 from 9 to 11 a.m. Parents must accompany children and send a letter in a parcel. SHS Angus Steers Win Championship Ribbon at LA Fair

A carload of prime Angus steers from Shafter High School Agriculture farm won the Reserve Grand Championship ribbon at the Great Western Livestock Show in Los Angeles, November 21–28, per agriculture instructor Burley Dooley. A carload of Shorthorn steers from the school took second in their division and other school entries earned third and sixth places in various heifer and light Hereford events.

Lee's Drive-In Closed Pending New Manager

The Lee's Drive-In restaurant, open since 1948, shut this week until a new manager is appointed. Legion commander Gene Guenther said the drive-in would reopen once a manager is chosen, with the closure attributed to current management changes.

Local Woman of 74 Descendants Buried Wednesday

Mrs. Anna Laurinda Fitzer, 75, of 460 Klassen Drive Shafter, pioneer resident, died Sunday in Bakersfield after a lengthy illness and was buried Wednesday at Armstrong Mortuary with Rev. Ted C. Mouser officiating. She left 74 descendants including six children and 38 grandchildren with 28 great grandchildren. Her birth month is listed. she had ties to Oklahoma and California communities. She had resided in the area for 32 years.

Becker Elected President of Shafter Chamber

Sam L. Becker, local insurance man, was elected president of the Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. He will take office January 1, replacing retiring president Mert Wiedmann. Lewis Carroll was named vice president, Bob Somers reelected secretary treasurer, and the slate was approved unanimously. The officers and board will be installed at a banquet planned for late next month.

Fire log notes early morning Santa Fe Rail flat-car damage

On Saturday December 1 at 8 36 AM a minor fire damaged the floor of a flat car on the Santa Fe Railroad about one highway car dragging. Toe papas responded to the fire call and prevented damage to the flat car and saved the lumber cargo.
