Extension Granted for Cotton Sales Certificates Filing
The final filing date of November 16 1985 for cotton sales certificates on sales before November 1 has been extended indefinitely by the Secretary of Agriculture. Kern county assistant county agent N D Hudson notes there is currently no established deadline and about 5 000 certificates have been filed by buyers who purchased cotton from growers.

Busy Month at the Shafter Library
In November 1976 readers withdrew 447 fiction and 233 non fiction books plus 57 magazines by adults. Juveniles removed 743 fiction and 445 non fiction books plus 51 magazines. Special requests came from 57 persons and 349 visitors were entertained. Nine adults and 48 juveniles received new library cards.

New High Building Opens At Shafter High School
The transportation building for Shafter High School nears completion with plumbing already approved. Electrical work and structural construction are due for inspection next Saturday, enabling the department of transportation and farm mechanics to move in. Latta says operations should start before Christmas vacation, as the 40 by 84 foot structure doubles facility space.

Eckman Heads Kern League Next Year
E C Eckman of Shafter was elected president for 1935 36 at Kern General Hospital Protective League’s Bakersfield meeting November 29. The league unites 18 Kern county branches to support county hospital service at 3 per diem with high taxpayer backing. Eckman plans to push California Farm Bureau Federation measures for clearer law and uniform county hospital funding statewide.

Potato Act Fines May Be Reduced
Congress may ease penalties under the Potato Act as proposed by Secretary Wallace. The law, in effect after midnight last Saturday, taxes three quarters of a cent per pound on potatoes sold by growers and imposes penalties on evasive buyers and sellers. No change to grower allotments. 7,014,000 bushels free of tax from California in 1936.

Shafter high school's affirmative team defeated Wasco high school in a Tuesday debate held before the full student body. The question asked whether the New Deal principles oppose American interests. Shafter Boys Hurt In Auto Accident
Three Shafter boys in a heavy sedan were injured preparing to send word for ambulances after a wreck on the Golden State Highway. A second collision occurred near the pass involving Lewis Edwards and Tommie Dorris, with all involved sustaining injuries. Edwards needed medical leave from Shafter High School after the incident.

Bond Vote Set for Richland Rio Bravo Districts
Richland and Rio Bravo residents will vote at Shafter High School on a 200000 bond issue from Kern County Union High School District to fund new buildings. If approved, bonds retire in four annual installments of 50000 with interest paid from a five cent per hundred tax levy.

Onion acreage to be somewhat increased in county
Incidental work in the office of L A Burteh agricultural commissioner shows increased onion acreage for spring shipment. In November deputies made 890 quarantine calls inspected 1693 shipments containing 74 298 plants. Twelve plant pest species were intercepted with infested shipments treated or returned. Ten box cars contaminated with cotton seed were steamed cleaned.

Spud Growers Abandon Walker Basin Project
Shafter potato growers Gene and William Mettler and R C Hanning announced they will discontinue russet variety production in Walker Basin. Poor soil and climate conditions, likely influenced by new potato regulations, led to abandonment after last season. A pump installation was removed and the project ended.
