California's San Joaquin Valley reports a record Thanksgiving week cotton harvest with over 90 000 pickers in fields. The high wage rate of 3 cents per pound and favorable weather boosted labor force and output. Workers are directed toward Kern and Kings Counties where crop remained.
City court cases heard by Judge Frank G Shaw on Wednesday resulted in three individuals being fined for drunken and reckless driving. Chestley Powell received the heaviest penalty a 250 dollar fine and suspended 180 day sentence with a 30 day suspension for two years. Ward Salisbury was fined 25 dollars and given a 30 day suspended sentence for two years. Jack Salisbury was fined 50 dollars and given a 60 day suspended sentence for two years.
Shaffer High announces a 49 game schedule for A B and C basketball squads for 1948 49. Coaches Lowell Todd Dan Bledsoe and Dick Heber lead the teams in Kern County Sierra League play with Garces High Tehachapi and Maricopa part of the league. Non league games include Taft Wasco East Bakersfield and Lindsay with a Kern Carnival opener December 10 and a season closer February 26 at Bakersfield.
December 1 sees a 10 cent fare hike on the Orange Belt Stage Line between Shafter and Bakersfield. The rate rose from 35 to 45 cents after approval granted August 17 by the California State Public Utility Commission, impacting all areas served by the company.
Dr A W Gaede spoke to Shafter Kiwanis at Motel Canelo about over two years in South America. He highlighted Paraguay with poor roads and primitive farming, and recounted a six month revolution and native attacks. Joe Frizzell led the program and answered audience questions.
Mr and Mrs Glen Putnam and sons John and Glen Jr hosted Thanksgiving with Mr and Mrs Harry Putnam and daughters Patsy and Laura Lu from Bakersfield visiting their relatives.
The fifth annual Shafter Community Chest drive reached its halfway point with a goal of $4825. Fund chairman H W Pat Kelly notes steady remittances and expects stronger results with payday. Volunteers may leave gifts at Bank of America in Shafter.
The fourth annual Christmas Decoration contest in Shafter invites local residents to enter. Gregory Malory and O. D. Handel outline divisions for residential, school and church winners with prizes from the sponsoring 20-30 Club. Rural entries may join and judges will determine winners.
Local unit schedules the next meeting for Tuesday December 7 at the Congregational Church. Members urged to attend the business session.
A new church edifice is planned by Union Congregational Church with a committee led by Peter Ohanneson. The project aims for a $50,000 building on the present James Street property, adjacent to Central and Shafter Avenues, with a parsonage at 169 North Highway. Rev. Baker and his family arrive from Los Angeles and will stay with Mrs. J C Ohanneson until the Zimmermans’ house is vacated for moving in.
Jack Janzen of Shafter High School F F A boy won grand champion in the Hereford division at the Great Western Livestock Show in Los Angeles. The Shafter group exhibited 63 steers and 6 sheep, earning multiple ribbons including second and third places for several exhibitors. Local participants included Lois Olsen with a grand champion Hampshire hog and James Mathis with a second in Herefords.
Harold R. Fletcher 28 died after a solo car crash on the Central Valley Highway a mile south of Shafter. He died at Kern General Hospital about five hours after the Tuesday evening wreck. Funeral services are set for Monday at 2:30 at Flickinger Jansen Mortuary with burial in Shafter Cemetery.
Ed De Mello was elected president for the coming year by Shafter 20-30 Club members. New officers include Dusty Rhoads as vice president Marvin Weidenbach as second vice president along with officers three four and five. Art Johnson and Tom Hayhurst were named delegate and alternate. Al Letizia of Fresno attended as guest. Twenty Wasco 20-30 members plan to attend next week’s joint meeting.
Mr and Mrs L J Brigante have bought the Wall Cafe at Lerdo and Shafter Avenues and will reopen in December as Jerry's Steak House. The cafe closed this week for equipment upgrades in the building owned by Mike Poznoff, father of Mrs Brigante. Brigante previously commanded the local prisoner of war camp for six months in 1945 and recently retired after 33 years in the Army.
