A Saturday evening near Hanford and Corcoran a five passenger car narrowly escaped a fatal crash with a suddenly drunk driver coming from the opposite direction. The driver swerved to avoid a head on collision, struck the rear fender, and his car damaged the hood as both vehicles tumbled apart.
The California Taxpayers Association reports October relief payments for the aged in Kern County averaged $61.59 per person, $22.35 above the national July average of $39.24, with state totals $61.25 for the aged and $77.23 for the blind. Proposition No 4 would raise aged and blind payments by $10 monthly, redefine ages 63 and 64 as aged, and remove the obligation for financially able adult children to support needy parents, threatening administration chaos. DEPART FOR WASHINGTON Pfc. and Mrs. Eugene Neufeld head to Washington, D C, as Private Neufeld joins the Military Air service.
Shafter High's football squads secured second place in the Kern-Tulare League with a 19 to 14 varsity win and a 6 to 0 victory for the lightweight team over Corcoran. The game featured a late drive, interceptions, and a postgame pledge by both schools to continue athletic relations next season amid reports of poor sportsmanship by some host players.
At the Shafter Motel the 20-30 Club Chamber of Commerce board re elected Bill Stoller as president with Dr. O G Ohlsson and Sam Becker as vice president and secretary treasurer. Nominations for a new slate were discussed as two guests attended and committees were formed to plan holiday activities and lighting for Christmas decor.
The Shafter 20-30 Club announces plans for the fourth annual Christmas decoration contest with special prizes in each division. O. D. Handel and Gregory Malory were appointed to lead and promise a bigger event this year. committee will reveal divisions and further details soon.
Mrs Zelma Kroeker of Shafter is reported recovering from injuries after a car collision at the Poplar Tulare intersection one mile west of Shafter last Friday. Her husband Pete Kroeker sustained minor injuries. their car collided with a Bakersfield driver Dennis B Smith. Both cars damaged. Highway Patrol continues investigation.
Maple School cafeteria cook Mrs Clarence Tackett will enter Bakersfield Hospital tomorrow morning for surgery. She expects to return home to North Shafter in a week and resume work in two weeks. Mr Tackett works for Em H Mettler and Sons.
The City Safety Council approved crossing improvements at the Central Avenue Santa Fe tracks. New bells and red lights will flash and ring at both north and south approaches to the main line and passing track, enhancing safety for students crossing daily.
Letters praising Kern County postal employees for aiding the 1948 Christmas Seal Sale were mailed to all county post offices. The sale opened November 22 and runs through Christmas to support the Kern County Tuberculosis and Health Association.
The Shafter Public Utility District board met at City Hall and adopted Ordinance No. 37 revising water rates. Superintendent Earl Unruh reported the sewage disposal plant neared completion and that the 18 inch outfall sewer line work paused awaiting vitrified pipe shipment.
Twenty Kern County youths will be honored for excellence in Scouting at an Eagle Scout Court of Recognition on Saturday evening December 11 at the new T N Harvey Auditorium in id City. State and national Boy Scout officials and other notables will honor the group with an exciting talk by a well known personage.
