Shafter Vet Leads Rescue in Korean Front Battle
A. Shafter veteran Sgt. Baltazar Lopez commanded a platoon of first cavalry combat engineers during the Chirye battle on the central Korean front. He formed a perimeter, fought 12 hours, evacuated three wounded, rescued seven more, retrieved four vehicles and nine weapons, and helped destroy five gun emplacements while his unit faced heavy enemy fire. Lopez previously served with American occupation forces in Tokyo.
