Maple Youth Receives Orders to Report to Infantry
Frank Pellett has received orders to report to the fourth infantry division at Fort Ordon on Sept. 6 after a recent medical exam at Camp Cook. He completed a year of training at Camp Hood, Texas and had been discharged a year earlier while remaining in the army reserves. Mrs. Pellett plans to stay in Wasco where her husband serves.

First Contest Tonight Sparks Shafter Men’s League Playoffs
Four teams tied for the Shafter league first half championship meet in Rio Bravo tonight with a second game Friday. If Russell’s Club wins the four way playoff they are champion. a loss could trigger a two out of three series next week in Shafter. Junior champs Tupman’s team claimed the junior crown last week, defeating North Camp 13 to 1 after a forfeiture gave North Camp the second half title.

Ginners Gather for Cooperators Field Day at Experimental Farm
More than 300 gin owners and managers are slated to attend the annual cooperators field day at the United States Experimental Farm next Wednesday. County Building Wing Work Starts in Shafter
Work began this week on a $25,000 county building wing in Shafter to add jail facilities a new courtroom justice of the peace offices and other county rooms. Dalke Brothers won the contract to construct the addition the first major task being the moving of the radio transmitter pole for the police station handled by Nikkel Iron Works under direction by County Radio Engineer William E. Whiting who traveled to Shafter to supervise the move.

Firemen Contain Powder Blaze at Famosa Underpass
Shafter firefighters battled a blaze at the Famosa underpass Tuesday night to prevent spread of insecticide powder in the drainage system. California Highway Patrol diverted traffic while Chief Art Craig and Robert Teeters assisted as crews loaded powder into buckets and removed it from the underpass.

T Olson, superintendent of the Richland School District for 22 years, retires in July moving to Watsonville where his wife attends a special education class. Bruce Crawford succeeds him, after previously leading Buttonwillow School District. Since 1928 Shafter’s Richland district grew from one building to about 1700 students and property valuation rose from a few hundred thousand to 24,329,725 dollars.

Vannatta Wins Safeway Bid For Lerdo Store
George Vannatta, Shafter contractor, won the bid to build a $140,000 Safeway store at Lerdo highway and James Street. City inspector E. K. Grant said construction estimates are not yet filled but license should be granted within a week. Gannon Construction Co. of Bakersfield was permitted to build six three bedroom houses in the Kirschman tract, with an estimated total of $48,000, bringing the month’s city total to $77,450.
