Jack Rodner of the San Joaquin Valley district will address Shafter American Legion members Monday night at 8 in Veterans Memorial Hall. The talk will cover the Central Valley Project effects on the Shatter Wasco Irrigation District and the Friant Canal under construction. Ted Thompson and William Green are expected to accompany Rodner, with Lawrence Anni possibly taking part in discussion.

Three 1948 Shafter High School graduates from Shafter ride to San Diego for preliminary naval training. They are Harvey Weyand 19 of Bakersfield by birth, Wallace Weyand and Burton Nance 19, and Jamis Bellows 19. Weyand attended Bakersfield College. Weber Named To Constable Job At Buttonwillow

Carl L. Weber a 28 year old American Legion commander and deputy sheriff was appointed by the board of supervisors to replace Constable Gerald Barneke who was killed in an accident. Weber has served at Buttonwillow for three years and his term expires December 31. Barneke had been elected for another four year term in the June primaries. The appointment is legal for the full term.

Engineer to Present Alternate Distribution System Plan

Paul Bailey civil engineer for the Shafter-Wasco Irrigation District will present an alternate distribution system report on October 3. He seeks permission to pursue an alternative to the Bureau of Reclamation plan, claiming potential district taxpayer savings of about 3 million dollars. If approved, the plan goes to the bureau for approval. Also on the legal front, Thomas Crowe Visalia attorney will meet with bureau counsel on October 18 to discuss proposals. Later this fall San Joaquin Valley district manager Jack Rodner will meet Bailey and board members to discuss further developments.

Exploratory oil crews base in Shafter for search near Blackwell’s corner

Shell Oil exploratory workers have established headquarters in Shafter at the old Oliver Implement Co. building on Central Valley Highway. R. V. Bob Payne reports 26 men, 19 with families, moved in this week and the crew will stay about a year with portable seismograph equipment for testing in the area.

Shafter Building Hits $53 700 Mark in Homes

Building in Shafter during August totaled 53700, chiefly for the Stone subdivision in the Kirschenmann tract. E. K. Grant said Bakersfield firm Gannon Construction Company was erecting six housing units at about 7600 dollars each under the supervision of Building Inspector.
