Ed Clendennen new Kern County Fair secretary manager addressed Shafter Kiwanis on fair operations and pari mutuel financing. Clendennen, ex Chowchilla fair manager, aims to boost attendance beyond a record 169 725.

In a special meeting last week W.LD. urged the Bureau of Reclamation to award the final Friant Kern Canal contracts to the low bidder. Cen-Vi-Ro Pipe Corporation of Southgate led five bids totaling 5 638 539, with engineers' estimates at 5 979 664. The bid will be reviewed in Denver before final award for a system linking northern San Joaquin Valley water to northern County farms.
Two men pleaded guilty to drunk driving charges after arrests Saturday and Sunday. Joe Benton Eubanks, 54, and Sandre A. West, 41, each were fined 158 dollars as revealed by the police department.
The Shafter area prepares for the 667 school year with 2504 students expected in district schools Tuesday. Richland and Maple schools forecast 693 and rising enrollments, while Wasco County totals reach about 64 473 with end of Labor Day vacations.
Arthur J. Hemingson, Shafter merchant, is slated as the next Kiwanis lieutenant governor for Division 18 in the California Nevada Hawaii district. He was nominated without opposition at a Kern Tulare caucus in Woodville and will replace Burt N. Kirk of Visalia. Hemingson, a Kiwanian for 20 years, has served as Shafter club secretary and boasts 11 years of perfect attendance.
Fire crews responded to a corn field fire northwest of Shafter and Jack avenues damaging a quarter acre. Cause listed as possible ignition from corn leaves or exhaust manifold on a New Idea corn picker from Coldwater Ohio. Later a structure fire at 179 Lerdo Avenue, residence of Vera Carter, may have started from a small screened porch with uncertain cause after extensive effort by two pumpers.
Bank of America promotes M. Sales to succeeding Raymond J. Timmerman as lending officer in the Chico district operations office. P. C. Clarkin notes Sales has a broad background, joining Bank of America in 1954 from an Idaho bank role.
Wasco News city and sports editor William F. Frye died Thursday when his car collided with another on Enos Lane three miles south of the Taft Highway. Frye's vehicle swerved after a tire blew out, injuring passenger Robert Johnson severely and sending Frye to Kern General Hospital. Jack Weathers of Bakersfield, driver of the other car, suffered less serious injuries. Marvin Scott of Bakersfield was treated and released. Frye previously worked at a Buena Park paper and is survived by his mother and a brother in Inglewood.
