Kern County Farm Adviser George W. Ferry reports 1956 cotton yields in the Shafter area should be satisfactory, with Acala 442 providing strong fiber and disease resistance. He credits U.S. Experiment Station and UC research for higher yields through improved fertilization irrigation and weed control while reducing production costs via mechanization.

Rice Cooperative Aids Buttonwillow Farmers

The Buttonwillow Rice Cooperative Gin and Rice Drier serves 45 grower members with a 1954-55 program yielding savings of 14058 dollars from processing 15341000 pounds of rice on 4000 acres and storing 1328870 pounds of field corn plus dry grain for members. In 1955 rice acres fell to 2400 due to allotments with 8845640 pounds processed. Community planted area totals 6000 in 1954 and 4000 in 1955.

Distribution System Realized In Two Years For Shafter Wasco

The Shafter Wasco Irrigation District plans the final phase of a $10.25 million system to tap the Friant Kern Canal by summer 1958. With Reclamation aid, the district will connect to main lines at Kimberlina Road and Fresno Avenue and begin taxing landowners to fund the project and set the 1957 tax rate after equalization hearings.

Southern Counties Urge Early Start On Feather River Project

Ten counties forming the Southern Empire area adopted a resolution urging the state to begin purchasing sites for the Feather River Project promptly. The measure asks San Luis Reservoir to be built and operated by California, with federal cooperation and funding for flood control and conservation.
