The council reviewed city problems at a regular meeting including topics on tax planning, census costs, and Ordinance No 153. A request over the Hudson tract and changes to a driveway at 189 Poso Street were noted. The group discussed paid firemen and vacation schedules while a sale of an estate property priced at $20,000 net was tabled.
Two 17 year old boys confessed to forcible entry at Forrest Long's Toppers store after being left alone briefly with a note, and were found with stolen shirts sweaters and other items at a potato shed. Shoes listed as missing remain unaccounted for though the boys deny taking them. The youths are cousins, one visiting Shafter.
Richland offices prepare for 1800 students returning for registration. 8th grade students will register in the Upper Grade hallway next to the Upper Grade office. All students must show evidence of polio immunization though many have already complied.
James Kester reports his gas and oil low in his pickup but a friend then saw him on Tulare street at night. A check revealed the vehicle had been used in a joyride. Shafter Police are investigating the incident.
Funeral services for Oliver F. Sly 72 of 143 E Orange were held at 2 pm Friday August 23 at the Pentecostal Church of God with Rev Wayne Owens officiating. Burial followed in Shafter Cemetery. Sly, a native of Indiana, had lived in Kern County four years and was connected to the town’s early fire service and a 1961 trailer court sale. He is survived by four daughters, a sister, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mortuary handled arrangements.
Ten men eleven women and four children from different countries were admitted as citizens in a Kern County ceremony August 21. The oath was administered by County Clerk Vera K. Gibson with Lloyd H J from the INS presenting the petition. The event included posting by the U S Marine Reserve, invocation by Glenn D. Puder, Bakersfield address by Gabriel W. Solomon, and pledge led by Allan H. McFarland. One former Canadian citizen, William Kim Harral Jr., age six, also gained citizenship. A reception followed with Post 6601 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Womans Club of Bakersfield hosting guests.
Irvin Fike shares a humorous installment buyer diary with Cass Gar ratz and Ray Duerksen in mind. The entries chronicle cars, a color TV, books, borrowed money, a land purchase, and the public library contrast, ending with a jab at Uncle Adolph over family frictions.
Sandra Loflin, seven, of 221 Atlantic, won the grand prize bicycle awarded by the Shafter Merchants association in the Back-to-School parade held Thursday night. Other winners included Ariel Nye and Stanley Fortenberry in Group 1, Terry Loflin and Sandra Loflin in Group 2, Kim Trout with a Shetland pony in Group 3, Sherry Lynne Nye and Carmelita Smith in Group 4, and Bobby Dickerson in Group 5 with a decorated owl.

Betty Posnoff reports yard reception at 445 Cross. Glen Smith’s car stolen Monday night by a 14 year old Shafter youth and found in Bakersfield.
An open invitation invites all Shafter football fans to the first Monday Morning Quarterbacks Club session on Monday September 9 at the Shafter Hotel dining room. The meeting will start at 7 am with talks from Shafter High coaches and guest speakers from other areas to follow.
Chief Hanley Witcher told the City Council that police surveyed the stop signs and recommended replacement of 19 signs and the count of 30 signs. Council approved the suggestion.
About 900 students expected to enroll as Shafter High School gets ready for opening day on September 3. Staff schedules include three general faculty sessions and department meetings. New teachers join seven educators in the faculty, with orientation to the school’s policies and curriculum.
The Kiwanis Club entertained all new teachers at a noon luncheon on Wednesday. Sam Becker served as Kiwanis chairman and president for the meeting. Other Shafter service clubs and guests attended the event.
A 14 year old boy from Shafter was treated in Bakersfield early Monday on auto theft and concealed weapon charges. He remains in Juvenile Hall custody.
Warren, Inc. of Bakersfield awarded Project 33-B for curb and gutters on Walker Tulare and Shafter avenues. The firm bid 11762.50, about 2264.70 below an earlier estimate and 3395.36 under the high bid of 15157.86 by Joe Brown. All bids came from Bakersfield contractors.
Mayor Harvey says the City Council will discuss a retirement program city insurance and the business license situation at its September 9 meeting.
Mr and Mrs Howard Powers and their sons Jerry and Rob visited the home of Mr and Mrs Lewis Woodard in Long Beach California on their route to the national water ski championship. They came to see family and rest during travel.
Postmaster Terene Guenther announces Monday September 2 Labor Day as a postal holiday. Rural and city offices will observe holiday schedules for collection receipt and dispatch of mail.
Shafter's Tax Study Committee led by Councilman Allen Zenk weighs switching from city to county assessments as city valuations exceed county figures. State Board of Equalization notes a trend toward combined assessments with many California cities contracting with counties for property tax services.
