The Kern County Fair starts Monday and officials anticipate the largest fair in history with packed crowds, expanded exhibits, and new rides. Local organizers state attendance and revenue targets exceed prior years as vendors prepare for the event.
Dick, general chairman of the committee, announces Buttonwillow PTA plans the fourth annual Fall Farm Festival for Saturday October 5. Breakfast served 7 to 9 a.m. at the school cafeteria.
Shafter volunteer firefighters begin a monthly training sequence with a drill each Thursday night. A new practical problem will be presented for hands on field experience and first aid procedures, with a transfer to an ambulance prepared after arrival at the scene.
Johnston reports a reader purchase within an eight project outline for a student event. The microfilm reader will enable the library to enhance access and support research for students.
Kiwanis officials announce Arthur H. Johnson as their candidate for principal speaker at the Division 33 conference. At 11 10 a.m. a collision on the 24th Street Spur left all auto passengers with neck injuries. James J. Smith drove the automobile. the truck was heavily loaded and pushed the car 150 feet. Bakersfield police investigated the crash. All victims remain under medical care.
City Council meets Monday to consider amendments to the business license ordinance proposed by the Merchant's Association. The changes target firms without a fixed Shafter address and will stay on the agenda until discussed further.
Elbert J Frantz 46 of Shafter died at 2 23 Tuesday morning. He was manager of the Kern Loan Company office in Shafter. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p m Friday at the Mennonite Brethren Church with Pastor Henry Dick officiating.
The Chamber of Commerce board will hold a meeting Tuesday at 7 15 p m at the Star ter Motel. Pat Kelly the Chamber president urges all Chamber members to attend these board meetings.
The Kern County Water Agency reports Governor Brown approved a contract to negotiate surplus water use and reduce irrigation costs. David Bryant, KCWA Negotiating Committee chair, presented the proto type to the ECWA board on September 12, with copies of Bulletin 1198 and the draft agricultural contract distributed to members.
Original Research Project describes infecting pinto beans with tobacco necrosis virus. Preheated samples showed higher survival after hot water exposure, but six hours later the preheated viruses became more heat sensitive. Report submitted for evaluation.

Farm Bureau President Robert L. Smith announced Fred Starrh was elected chairman of the Shafter Farm Center. Art Penner is secretary and Everett Baker serves as board delegate. The center exceeded its 62 63 membership quota and Smith expects Shafter to continue leading in the year.
Richland PTA announces the annual barbecue and carnival set for Thursday October 3. Russell Paul and John Stockton will oversee the booths at the event.
