Registration details outline kindergarten and first grade age requirements for 1963 enrollment. Children must be five by December 1 1963 for kindergarten or six by that date for first grade and must present last year’s report card transfer. Registration occurs in the cafetorium on Wall Street for Primary School while Grades 4 and above register at building offices on September 3 starting at 8 am.
Shafter hosts a children parade for ages five to fourteen on Central Avenue starting at seven. The route runs from the old theatre lot to Central Valley Highway and back past the judge»s stand. Five classifications include best homemade wheeled entry best decorated largest pet smallest pet and dressed pet. Grand prize is a bicycle with prizes for runners-up.
The 1962-63 annual report notes Shafter students and 25 from outside the U S attended. Spring enrollment reached 500 with 31 classes. The president cites Bakerfield College comparisons and campus improvements including dining, horticulture lab, central heating and cooling, and expanded locker space for men and women.

Attendance for July 1963 reached 6,955 swimmers up from 5,494 in July 1962. The pool will stay open through August until school begins. About 100 area boys participated last year in the activity.

A county wide beauty contest will name Miss Kern County Fair for the Kern County Fair September 23 to 29. Contestants must be 16 to 20 and Kern County residents for six months, with birth certificates required. The winner earns a $500 cotton wardrobe, a trophy, and a tiara. the runner up receives a trophy. Mary Carmen Strelich will coach all contestants at the Fashion school.
