Kern County dispatch reports the Shafter Labor Camps Inc. will take over the North and South Shafter Farm Labor camps on Sept. 30 and reopen next Tuesday with nearly 500 enrollments. Spokesmen say both camps will remain open this year and rumors of closures are unfounded.
The Shafter community emphasizes school as a key to American leadership and world strength. Parents and neighbors are urged to support teachers, visit campuses, and actively engage in guiding youth through a challenging era. H W Kelly made the first of his official visits as district governor to Rotary Clubs in Goleta Sonora and attended an annual charter night by Patterson Rotary Club Last week he planned an official visit to Chowchilla Rotary Club this week.

Mrs Paula V McCluve learned Saturday of her father J W McCave passing away Friday in Wact Texas. McCave had been ill for some time. Funeral services were held Sunday.
Four Neuman brothers assume control of Neuman & Johnson Hardware Co in Shafter. Clarence Herb Marvin and Harvey Neuman rename to Central Hardware Co with Wayne Smiley as manager. Store at 242 Central Avenue retains major appliance and hardware brands under new ownership.
Bakersfield Indians under Tony Governor host a baseball clinic at Sam Lynn Park for about two hundred youngsters 12 and under. Registration at 8:30 AM includes a talk on teamwork and fundamentals, group drills, and free admission to the league game each day with equipment provided by the club.
A daughter named Carolyn Ruth was born Friday to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hasty at Mercy hospital in Bawersfield. Both mother and baby are reported doing well. The Hasty couple reside in Shafter where Mr. Hasty serves as principal of the Richland school district.
The Coberly West Company of Shafter will enter a draft horse in the California State Fair Horse Show in Sacramento. The event runs August 29 to September 7 in a 5 500 seat arena with over 300 entries and $30,000 in awards. Notable participants include Bob Egan and Miss Peggy Platz with Carbon Copy, Pat Malcolm with six hunters, and Mr and Mrs Adrian Van Sinderen with Hackney ponies.
Mr and Mrs Vernon Pierce return from a weeklong trip aboard their Globe Swift at Petaluma. They flew to San Luis Obispo Morro Bay and San Francisco visiting O H Strom and viewing Oakland bay bridges from about 7000 feet. They bought the plane in February and ended with a two and a half hour flight home to Shafter. Nancy and Rodney stayed with relatives during the vacation.
Mr and Mrs H F Maupin the parents of Mrs Clara Foster of Shafter visited their daughter last week in the community.
Kern County Library offers titles to help youths reach emotional and mental maturity and manage adult life responsibilities. Books include Teen Days by Frances Strain, Girls Grows Up and Boy Grows Up, On Being a Real Person by Fosdick, Love at the Threshold, Its How You Take It, and Your Best Foot Forward, authored by educators and psychologists.
James E. Holmes and John Emery were arrested over the weekend on drunkenness charges. Each man was fined 25 dollars and given thirty days in jail, with the sentences suspended for two years.
With the largest enrollment in years, Shafter and McFarland High Schools will start classes on September 2 in the Kern County Union High School District. Shafter expects about 500 students by October and McFarland about 240. both schools hold registration August 29 and 30. New Shafter teachers include Sophia Derbyshire English and drama, Joseph Bruner English, Dick Heber mathematics, Gwenyth Parker girls physical education, and Ed Schacht industrial arts. counseling services will be led by Dan Bledsoe with staff including Edwin De Mello and Amelia Cornell. testing by James Wilson, and remedial reading and mathematics by Bruner and Wilson.
Shafter Kiwanis softball team faces Wasco Lions in Wasco for a tune up before a big clash with the Rotary Club next month. Manager Earl Weil plans a 7 p.m. gathering at McClure Drug Store to rally players and fans. Last month the Lions beat Shafter in a close game.
Kern County Fair and Horse Show secretary George Wendt announces entries are due by September 15 for the fair running September 23 to 28. Premiums total 79 000 with 10 000 in horse show premiums. exhibition space is limited due to high early-entry demand. show nights are September 25 26 and 27 under Herb Vaughn.

Senator William F. Knowland urged immediate completion of all Central Valley Project phases at a Bakersfield luncheon. He warned delays would cause San Joaquin Valley flood damage far exceeding added costs. The trip included E I Shummell, Bob Cousins, Gerald Jones and Ed Hyatt with radio broadcast on KERO.
The Agri cultural Labor Bureau holds a wage meeting in Fresno Memorial Auditorium at 2:00 p m today to set cotton picking wages for this crop. Ray Provost of Producers Cotton Oil Co urges broad participation to reflect all viewpoints. Last year wages were 2 75 cwt for first pick 3 25 cwt for second pick and 1 50 cwt for swapping. The meeting is open to workers.
The Business and Professional Women host a Thursday social at Manuel Park for members families and guests. Mrs Geraldine Unruh handles reservations by phone Shafter 682 and members not yet contacted should reach her. A barbecue dinner with Jack Battaglia and L T Walker officiating will be served with all the trimmings at 6 00 p.m.
Mr and Mrs Harry Vannatta and their children Marjorie and Harry are spending a week at Long Beach occupying a beach cottage they rented for the holiday period.
