The Delano scribe Larry Freeman is praised for originality and independence in a world of mass production and conformity. He is described as maintaining his individuality while serving as a newspaper director in the state publishers association, challenging routine and urging rebellion against standardized roles.
Navy Oil Company inaugurates a new super service station on the triangular block bounded by James State Streets and Lerdo Highway. Grand opening runs August 29 30 and 31 with free Clover Leaf Key Ring and quart of Quaker State Oil for customers. The facility features air cooled offices five gas pumps wash rack truck facilities and offices for Shafter Wasco district orders. Key staff includes manager Jack Thompson. The plant showcases Navy Valoring Gasoline and Quaker State oils plus Kelly tires Willard batteries and full accessories.
The Shafter Public Utility District postpones the bond election from September 9 to October 10 due to publication technicalities. The $248,000 issue funds a larger sewage disposal plant and water system expansion to serve up to 15,000 people, addressing mosquito control and health concerns amid city growth.
The Richland school district reports a new intermediate section building costing about 190000 with seating for 480 more students. O T Olson, superintendent, says the two sections hold twelve rooms for 5th and 4th grade classes plus two for sixth grade, featuring radiant heating, automatic cooling, acoustic tiling, extensive window space and skylights. A future large auditorium is planned to match the building design.
Shafter debuts a temporary dog pound in the city yard for unlicensed dogs. About a dozen dogs are picked up weekly and counted each Friday by the county pound master before transport to Bakersfield.
At the Shafter Rotary noon meeting, Carpenter, a former St. Mary’s football player, praised Slip Maddigan’s teams and tactics while noting his own ten years in the Hawaiian Islands. He lauded Shafter’s summer recreation program and urged support for high school teams as visiting Rotarians looked on. Next week’s program will feature the film “A Stitch In Time” on farm accidents.
City and Central barber shops announced new hours today. The shops will open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily including Saturdays.
Shafter Farm Labor Camps Inc plans to operate the North and South Shafter camps as of September 15 under a revocable U S Department of Agriculture use permit. Occupancy will be limited to agricultural workers, but residents may work for any employer. Merrill Thomas chairs the growers group. the unit invites growers to join with a $1 membership and $25 voting fee. Directors plan to buy two government trucks and set up an advisory board.
Holger Hansen, Student Body Counsel Advisor at Shafter High School, announces a fall football season ticket sales contest for students and adults. Tickets cost 2.50, valid for all four home games. Prizes include an adult grand prize lifetime football pass and three top student prizes totaling 10 50 and 2.50. Contest closes September 26 with the Executive Board as judges.
A joint American Legion and Legion Auxiliary County Council meeting in Wasco included four Auxiliary units Shafter Wasco Tehachapi and Bakersfield. The McFarland Auxiliary plans to surrender its charter due to waning interest while Buttonwillow organizes a new unit. Next meeting is October 12 in Delano.
Principal Ralph E. Gribble announced Maple Elementary will begin the 1947-48 school year on Monday September 8. He noted Wildwood School District is outside Maple, so bus schedules and routes will be changed. First grade enrollment details continued on page 12.
Isaac Newton Cardwell, a Spanish American War veteran and retired farmer, died August 22, 1947 in Sawtelle California at 66. Funeral services were August 25 1947 at 10 am at Janzen Funeral Home officiated by Reverend B E Andrews. Burial followed in Shafter Cemetery. He was born February 25 1881 in Kentucky and had lived in Shafter two years. Survived by five sons Russell Jerry Charles Richard and Donald and two daughters Faye Valentine and Mildred Williams.
Hill outlines adoption of an audio-visual teaching device at Shafter High School. Principal Jack Hill presided over a Kiwanis meeting at Cawelo Motel where the machine recorded voices and sounds on paper tape for immediate playback. The device promises benefits for speech and English classes and includes plans for a war surplus Link Trainer building and a new cafeteria.
Shafter city considers installing electrolier street lamps to illuminate Central Avenue from Five Points to the High School, parks, and business districts on James and Munzer streets. Pacific Gas and Electric Company submitted plans. council will study and seek public input before taking action.
The state forest system now covers about 9,302,000 acres in 37 states, reflecting ongoing growth and management efforts across public lands.
City officials nominate A. J. Hemingson to serve on the Dr Morris Mosquito Abatement district board. Hemingson previously led a Shafter Chamber committee that secured annexation to the district. Mayor Frizzell also names Ralph Tucker for rent control director in the Shafter district.
An 8 lb 12 oz baby girl was born August 20 to Rev. and Mrs E Lacy Bradhurst of Shafter. he is pastor at Smith Corners Pentecostal Church. A son arrived August 22 to Mr. and Mrs Clyde Walker at Mercy Hospital Bakersfield weighing 8 lb 9 oz. An 8 lb boy was born August 27 at Wasco Maternity Home to Mr. and Mrs Sydney Self, Shafter residents.
