Readers urge schools to teach sex education and applaud a new non profit group taking over two North and South Shafter farm worker camps. The move aims to prevent closure, cover costs, and maintain housing for about four hundred families while urging resident cooperation for success.
Recent visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. P. B. Buller were Mrs. Verna Furlong and her sister Mrs. Earl Johnston of Ingersol Ontario Canada. Also visiting were Mrs. Ella Whicker, Mrs. Ora Henley, Mrs. Eloise Brannan and daughter Barbara.
Shafter High School plans a threefold program for the new school year focusing on conduct oversight, individualized curricula, and morale improvement. Principal Jack Hill reports expanded counseling, remedial reading, new shop and aviation courses, and full-time staff in PE music and study hall. The district expects enhanced testing, health services, and audio-visual aids with four radio programs and flight orientation participation.
Shafter Kiwanis meets at Cawelo Motel as Earl Weil reports delegates favor dividing the district into Kings Kern Tulare and Inyo Kern. Lieut. Governor Elliott Taylor will oversee both new districts through year end. softball practice planned vs Wasco Lions. guests include Charlie Boydston Bill Ratzlaff and Violet Hemingson.
Robert Grisso, longtime Wasco and Shafter figure, died at 42 on August 13 in Methodist Hospital Los Angeles after a prolonged illness. Funeral services were held in Wasco with burial at Union Cemetery Bakersfield. He served in the 408th Engineering Service Battalion overseas 2 years 8 months and is survived by his widow Mary, two sons Robert Gordon and Rodney Marion, his mother Hattie Grisso, a brother Paul and two sisters May Buckland and O H Arnold.
The Agricultural Labor Bureau of the San Joaquin valley calls a meeting for next Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in Fresno Memorial Auditorium to discuss and recommend harvest wages for this year's cotton crop. Cotton growers are urged to attend to present wage recommendations. workers may also attend.
Richland schools begin Tuesday September 2 with buses on last year’s opening-day timetable. Kindergarten entrants must be five by March 1 1948 and first graders six by that date. The district lists a full teaching staff across eight grades plus specialists, with two kindergarten rooms and reconfigured Santa Fe Building rooms to accommodate growth.
Members of the Shafter American Legion Auxiliary Unit must send reservations by September 1 for the delegates dinner at the state convention. The Tuesday September 23 dinner at the Biltmore Bowl Los Angeles costs 6.50 per plate and is open to auxiliary members and guests with entertainment by Hollywood stars. Send reservations to Betty A. Les Hobson owner of the Dial Cleaners sponsored ten team members for the recently concluded ball season. The team won the Junior league championship and celebrated with a gala steak dinner at the Shafter Motel. Tom Lacy, a former team member, attended as special guest. The players are high school age boys.
Mrs. L. T. Qobele spent the week in Bakersfield visiting her sister and brother in law Mr. and Mrs. Mike Collins at their home.
The Shafter 20 30 Club Flying Spud Kings with five wives depart at dawn from Shafter Airport in three twin engine Cessnas for the 20 30 International Conclave in San Antonio Texas. Juarez hosts the delegation on the first leg. Delegates plan to showcase Shafter potatoes and promo material at the event with Kern County Chamber of Commerce support.
The American Legion post met to plan Teen Age dances with Jim Hahn and J H Revell on the dance committee alongside Blackie Waymire. They discussed the building project with two architects and a graves registration unit led by Lee Willoughby for veterans burials in Shafter.
Shafter Kiwanis powerful softball squad faces Wasco Lions in a Tuesday night rematch at the Wasco ballpark. Start time 8 p.m. A large Shafter crowd is expected as Kiwanis stars return from vacation to test the Wasco nine ahead of the Rotary championship clash scheduled for early next month.
Dr. J H Revell described wartime plastic surgery advances in nose and facial reconstruction using skin bone and tissue grafts at Shafter Rotary Club. Autobiographical sketches followed by three new members Dr Keith Musgrave Dr Elliott McClure and others from nearby Rotary clubs attended. Al Ingraham presided.
Mr. and Mrs. P. B. Buller hosted visitors last Tuesday evening including two nieces Maxine Buller of Long Beach and Matilda Wiebe of Kansas and nephew Arnold Wiebe of Kansas.
The North Shafter and South Shafter Farm Labor Camps will continue under the non profit Growers Group, with Jack Manweiler and Bill Trampp retained as managers. The group seeks a revocable use agreement with the Department of Agriculture, may consolidate camps later, and aims to keep rents only high enough to cover operation costs.
