Shafter begins harvest as E. I. Porter starts picking two miles west of town on a 20 acre Geld ranch. First picking weighs 1435 pounds with cotton plants two and a half feet high and bolls opening. Local gins ready to handle a bumper crop across several fields and portents a strong season.
Death claimed Kern county pioneer Mrs Marguerite J Ladera 65 after a two month illness at her Shafter home. She had lived in Kern county for 46 years and was bedfast for a fortnight. She passed away Tuesday night at her residence following an illness.
The cotton was of good grade, according to C. C. Selden, manager of the association. Picking of cotton started in Shafter Thursday afternoon, but as yet no cotton has been ginned here.
The Mennonite Brethren tabernacle in the Shatter community is being torn down to create extra parking near the new church edifice nearly ready for occupancy. Built twenty years ago, the structure expanded to hold about nine hundred seats as the congregation grew from about 40 to over 400. The Rev. Wim J. Bestwater pastors the church with D L Schellenberg as business chairman and Arneald Bergen as choir leader.
Rio Bravo edged the American Legion Juniors 5 to 4 in ten innings as Simons of Rio Bravo pitched. A four run rally by the Juniors in the ninth tied the score. Both teams collected nine hits.
A crew harvests the local sugar beet crop on ranches of John F Penner, Herbert Loewen, John Friesen and H J Loewen. Beets are topped in the field, loaded onto trucks to Famosa, then shipped by rail to the Oxnard factory. The 12 acre crop yields 20 to 28 tons per acre of high quality beets.
A Johnson test of new oil sands in the Union oil well is being made today. Reportedly 12 feet of promising sand was encountered after deepening operations began, and this land is being submitted to the Johanson test.
The Cafe Neuman names joint managers Bill Neuman, a noted Shafter resident, and Bill Homer, recently arrived from Wasco, signaling a leadership change for the local dining spot.
Kern county boards pass ordinances creating the first zoning district. The highway zone runs 600 feet on either side from Delano to Lebec, divided into A B and C districts. A district covers 600 feet along open highway with approaches near Bakersfield as B districts. Constrits at Greenfield McFarland and areas east of the highway between California Avenue and Brundage Lane defined.
Stanley Abel of Taft has gained votes beyond the eight that returned him in the Taft supervisor race, leading ahead of his opponent McClintock as results update.
Telegram from Tulare to City of Shafter reports Public Works Administration grant of 27 405 dollars for Shafter disposal plant. A. J. Elliott referenced. Shafter Public Utility district plans to add this to 33 000 dollars already approved, funding sewer system project.
Supporters of a proposed Shafter city incorporation file a petition with over 160 property owner signatures to trigger a special election. The measure requires signatures from at least 25 percent of assessed valuation, and organizers delay formal presentation to allow more signatures before submission to the board of supervisors.
A new high school building project includes a biology room measuring 28 by 29 feet, a music room 85 by 27 feet, and another classroom 28 by 29 feet. Each room will be equipped for its intended use.
Western Auto Supply issues a franchise for a Shafter store. Herb L. Comfort holds the lease on the east room of the Kirschenmann building beside The Press. The building nears completion and stock and equipment installation will start, aiming for a late month opening.
Mountain Spa Shafter Growers discuss acreage divided between commercial potatoes and seed spuds. No. 2 quality has a small market with modest prices, while No. 1 Grade A remains the higher grade reference.
Miss Petra Valensuela a Shafter resident for six months died at her home Tuesday evening. Born in Mexico she had lived in California for twenty years. She is survived by her mother Mrs Adre Martinez.
Funeral services for Mrs. Caro line Herrboldt 70 of Shafter were held at the Reformed church with Rev. L Kueffner officiating. Interment followed in Shafter cemetery. A German vocal selection was sung during the rites. Survivor list includes husband, siblings, and children across California, Oregon, and South Dakota.
Sporadic beet growing efforts appeared in Kern with Plant 25 Acre. In 1986 Phil Ohanneson, who had success, partnered with Camp to plant 140 acres this year. They average 20 tons per acre with sugar content around 17 percent, and field tests suggest final sugar content above 15 percent after harvest.
Harvesting of Thompson seedless grapes in Shafter slowed this week. So far 13 carloads have shipped to Oakland canneries. An estimated 25 more carloads are expected to leave the area this season.
Shafter residences and businesses are being numbered at no cost to owners. The project began Friday on California Street with Cen tral avenue soon followin g. The Southern California Gas company funds the effort. A. I. English of Wasco leads the numbering from T. V.'s Corner outward along Shafter highway Lerdo road and sides.
