Union Oil announced immediate deepening of the Shafter wildcat after a 10 310 foot hole yielded a drill stem test showing salt water. Despite gas shows being below expectations, crew worked to clear a stuck bit quickly as coring into the oil zone continues to classify the sand and evaluate oil potential.
A two-vehicle crash at Tulare and Popier streets left W R Brown of Erich Oklahoma with a deep gash and a fractured wrist while Ed Dolmatoff of Shafter suffered bruises. The cars were wrecked, one toppled a boulevard stop sign and both drivers received cited for alleged traffic violations.

Mr and Mrs Peter Frantz sold their California and Munzer street corner property of 75 by 100 feet to George Isaac and will move to their son's ranch north of town September 1. Frantz family arrived in Shafter in 1919 and built a comfortable home after purchasing the lot. They plan a smaller dwelling on Emil Frantz’s ranch after moving.
Virgil Trantham stands before Judge W. L. Bradshaw in superior court Bakersfield on two felony counts negligent homicide and driving while intoxicated causing bodily injury for the mobile accident of June 20.
The county board of supervisors approved a revised 1937 38 budget cutting original requests by 776 672 dollars and setting total expenditures at 4 138 082 dollars.

A year ago Saturday August 21 fire threatened the town of Shafter as winds shifted. Volunteers and fire trucks battled from 11:30 Friday night until Saturday noon keeping the blaze under control. The King Lumber yard and offices were destroyed. business houses and dwellings were damaged by embers. State forestry trucks from Bakersfield and a Santa Fe locomotive arrived as winds shifted, delivering heavy water to the burning lumber piles.
