Three Santa Fe engineers completed a survey for a modern Shafter rail station expansion to ease congestion during peak spud harvest. Proposals include extra storage tracks, improved switching, and more warehouses to handle a 60 percent rise in shipments from cotton, grapes, and sugar beets, with no start date set.
Raymond Kay 19 son of Dr and Mrs M M Kay of Shafter completed his first solo flight this week at Kern County Airport. He has been a student pilot for two weeks and his solo time reflects rapid progress in aviation training.
Community rivalry between Shafter and Wasco stirs a heated fight over the election to form the new irrigation district and elect five directors plus a collector-assessor treasurer. Shafter backs John C. Penner, Wasco backs Fred Pritschke, with turnout urged for Friday's vote to secure a voice in water benefits.

Films include Empty Holsters from Warner Brothers with Dick Foran and Patricia Walthall, You Can t Have Everything from 20th Century Fox, and Souls at Sea from Paramount with Gary Cooper. Souls at Sea plays two days starting Sunday.
Principal E. P. Janes announces a new seven period day starting September 13 at Shafter High. Each class lasts 55 minutes with five minutes for room changes, replacing the old 45 minute nine period plan. The change aims to reduce double periods in vocational subjects and free time for study and activities.
Shafter high school F F A members move prize stock to the Sacramento state fair led by the China Clipper Poland China boar owned by the Shafter chapter. Richard Harris and Omer Evans accompany the shipment as sixteen boys prepare fourteen potential blue ribbon projects across livestock poultry crops and farm mechanics under Glenn O Nay.
A minor collision on the avenue caused by a badly turned vehicle led to damage to two machines. No injuries reported and authorities responded at the scene.
Judge F. E. Mannel, Shafter justice of the peace, fell ill during a Alameda visit and was moved from the Oakland sanitarium to Fort Miley government hospital. He faces a complete examination with X ray equipment to diagnose his illness as he nears a return to duties.
Cutting and drying of grapes on about 500 acres around Shafter marks the raisin harvest. Reports say this year's crop is the heaviest in years with growers averaging three tons per acre. Crews began on the Sill ranch and Harry West's property, with other large growers like J W Nickel J E Urh and Z C Bartel also operating. Grapes are dried in the fields and shipped to Fresno as market prices remain strong.
Judge Malcolm Glen of Sacramento confirmed Stanley Abel as supervisor after a recount. Abel won by seven votes over Leonard McClintock, with the final tally on 2536 to 2529.

Bob Neuman left West for Los Angeles to pick up his stolen car recovered by Southland police officers. Police Chief Davis of Los Angeles reported the machine was found and in fairly good condition. Neuman had been on vacation in southern California when the theft occurred.
