Sunday noon collision near Shafter involved F C Wiebe car flipping over. Mrs Wiebe suffered a head wound requiring eight stitches and neck injury while a daughter hurt her leg. four other children and a nephew escaped with minor bruises and a shaking. Mr and Mrs Tabor in other car uninjured.
A illustrated lecture titled Communism and Its Cure will be presented Monday evening at 7 30 by Rev and Mrs Wm Rawlins and a Biola Institute trio from Los Angeles at the Mennonite Brethren church. The program includes pictures of Ryun Aare der under communism and inroads in America, plus vocal and piano accordion numbers. All are invited to attend.
The first Prophetic Bible Conference on the Mt Hermon grounds ran August 11 to 16. Bible teachers included Dr William Cartier of New York City Dr Chas G Trumbull editor of the Sunday School Times Philadelphia and Dr F W Russell director of Christian work at Mount Hermon. Three lectures were held each morning and an evening service conducted by a visiting minister. The event was well attended and may become an annual occurrence.
California state administrators under the State Board of Equalization seized about 10000 bottles of whiskey gin rum and other spirits worth an estimated 10000. Absconded liquor may be destroyed or sold at public auction and Attorney General A S Webb is asked to rule on whether the state can sell the seized liquor. The action follows un stamped bottles found in licensed establishments.
Governor Merriam and the Highway Commission in Sacramento will trim 5.1 million from the 1935 37 construction program due to reduced gas tax revenue while cities gain an extra quarter cent. Public Works Director Kelly notes prison labor as a planned remedy with 542 inmates already at road camps and 2,000 men proposed from San Quentin and Folsom to shifts roadward.
The Shafter high school will open for the fall term on Tuesday September 10. Elementary schools are expected to open a week earlier on Tuesday September 3, but no official statement is available from the trustees. Definite information is hoped for next week.
F. F. Latta plans relocating a house a club house and a garage from Kimberlina to his lot in Camp and Channeson subdivision. He will add to the house and convert the club house into a library. The improvements will create an attractive home place.
One of Shafter's oldest groups, the Christlicher Jugendverein of the Mennonite Brethren church, will hold its 332nd meeting this Sunday at 7 30 p m. G J Siemens serves as president with Esther Unruh as secretary. The program features openings, minutes, 14 new members, songs, readings, a life of Peter talk, music, a foreign missions collection, and bilingual remarks by H E Unruh.
Federal data show Bacchus more popular in San Francisco than Los Angeles. LA has 11 breweries while San Francisco has 26. southern cities host 12 231 cocktail purveyors versus 21 677 in the north. California UC Davis reports 300 plus fall term signups, a record. A Mexican gunboat seized 15 tuna boats off San Diego then released them after inspection in Magdalena Bay. Brother Albert of St Mary’s marked his 34th birthday on August 20. Virginia Donham, a San Francisco beauty, vies for Miss America, 65 contestants. Helen Wills Moody will skip the national tennis tourney, upsetting Helen Jacobs. Congressman Dockweiler notes coast defense strength resembles a sixth‑rate power.
Winslow Carlton, head of the federal division of self-help cooperatives in California, asks for about 4.5 million dollars of public funds to support 100 southern California coops leasing factories bakeries and production units. The State Relief Commission approved a 3 million dollar loan pool under his plan, which has been sent to Washington for action.
The Shafter All-Stars beat Goode's Dairy of Bakersfield 9 to 4 after a tight game. They tied the score late and rallied for multiple runs in the final frame before the large home crowd. Tonight they travel to Wasco for a league game as Taft and Arvin contest results remain undecided.
Works Progress Administration head Frank Y. McLaughlin confirms that President Roosevelt’s order to drop from relief rolls anyone refusing WPA work will be enforced in California. He says the program aims to employ destitute, able bodied persons until private work returns, not to compete with private industry. The relief system offers wages lower than private sector pay to help clients re establish themselves until they can find private jobs.
A petition to form a milk marketing area was filed with the State Department of Agriculture by 78 dairymen who ship to Sacramento and nearby markets. The signers claim over 65 percent of both producer count and milk volume within the Sacramento area including North Sacramento Florin Del Paso Heights Broderick and adjacent city limits. The area totals 348000 gallons per month and is the third filing under the new milk market stabilization law following San Francisco and Stockton-San Joaquin.
A strike of potato workers on the E. H. Mettler rand in Santa Maria ends with a new wage scale. Field workers receive 35 cents an hour and shed workers 45 cents an hour.
Mrs. A. J. King and daughter Anita Jane of Sacaton, Arizona, are guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Harrison at the United States Experiment Farm. Mr. King, superintendent at the Sacaton experiment farm, is expected to join his family here late this week.
The Towans Local Chorus 10 Sing 1 along with Shafter Mennonite male chorus will provide music for the big yearly Iowa picnic at Delano Tuesday evening August 27. Prof T R Nickel Earlimart superintendent will speak. Mrs Eunice R Mathers of Mc Farland will read in costume. Event starts 6 30 with a basket dinner and ice cream served by the Iowa association. All former Iowans of northern Kern and southern Tulare invited.
California vintners forecast 50 million gallons of wine output for 1935 based on a survey by Gerald G. Pearce economist. They expect 35 million gallons sweet wine 15 million gallons dry wine 3 million gallons commercial brandy and 250 thousand gallons grape concentrate using about 700 thousand tons of the 2 million ton grape crop. The revival would utilize otherwise curtailed raisin and fresh grape markets.
Mrs. Maria Savage evicted by court order slept on a doorstep for three days before allowing movers to take her furniture off a sidewalk and street and then went to live with friends. A gourd owned by Mrs. M Harden split after 42 years of service. Berkeley officer C H Martin vacationed at Crater Lake, a bear dragged him from his tent while he tried to play dead.
A Federal State Crop Reporting Service bulletin by George Scott says California pasture and range conditions are the best in 17 years, at 92 percent, up from 57 percent last year. Water supplies are adequate, fire losses light, and stockmen can manage cattle at low cost. Prospects for the next three months look favorable.
Kern Academy will begin its fall term on Monday September 9 with Sunday September 1 designated as registration day from 9 a m to 9 p m. The faculty includes H A Davis principal Bible and history E M Christiansen science mathematics and woodwork Esther Reinmuth English and German Austin Hunter seventh and eighth grades Verd Johnson fourth to sixth grades Mrs Clara Heinrichs first to third grades and Mrs David R Miller piano.
Shafter will be well represented in higher education as classes resume. Entrants include Darrell Janzen Jimmie Camp Harold Voth and Willard Johnson headed to Davis Agricultural College Howard Payne UC Davis and UC Los Angeles Francis Midgley Max McKinley and Daphne McKinley to UC Los Angeles San Jose Teachers College. Albert Kattenhorn will practice teach in a Davis area high school.
At the Stockton fair in August a first of its kind children’s hobby exhibit draws all ages. The pet section features a county’s oldest turtle and a large Newfoundland dog, with butterflies pottery and photos also on display. Mrs. Florabel Brennan leads the effort promoting California history through pupil projects and fair participation.
Redwood City reports a feud between Urban S. Marshall and Carl R. Scott over the county engineer’s office. Each man barricaded himself inside the office at separate times, prompting the sheriff to order both to stay away until the courts determine who holds the post.
