The boards adopt an 11 888 795 high school district budget and a 2 707 316 junior college district budget for 1963 64 with a total of 14 596 111 for two districts. Deputy Supt Taber says the expected tax rate is 2.07, to be finalized later.
A Bee County youth aged 17 joins Kern County Land Company workforce. Survived by daughter Mrs Rosalee Rohm of Oildale and son Charlies Jr. Also survived by four Gall Channing and Brett Hitchcock. Funeral services at Greenlawn Mortuary with service time pending.
City Council held a special session on Thursday to approve remodeling plans for the local food bank building. Hemingson’s plans call for updates to facilities and layout to improve operations and community services.
The study will continue this fall and a meeting to establish the continuing study is set for August 22 at 7 30 p m in Bakersfield at the district administration offices building 2000 24th street The public is invited.
Mr and Mrs Albert Neeley were injured in a Sunday accident while returning home from a weekend trip. The couple were in a car with unnamed companions when the crash occurred late afternoon. Authorities investigated the scene and transported the injured to a local hospital.
After complaints and several cancellations the Shafter City Council studied its new business license ordinance. They noted contractors struggle to bid due to high licenses for out of town firms and paused further action to consult local business interests before the next meeting. The council also adopted Ordinance No 154 to annex the I A Gee tract at Central Highway and Euclid Ave into M 1 zoning for a planned new factory at that corner.
The district approved a 1962-63 budget of 128,728 led by Clyde Johnston school superintendent. He noted the $2.00 tax rate since 1953 with no change despite rising enrollment and costs. Bond assessments total 10 cents with bonds expiring in five and nine years. Savings came from cutting county library services, moving typing to the school staff, and trimming two-day music to one day per week.
Everett Baker serves a fourth year as director of the Fifteenth District Agricultural Association overseeing Kern County Fair preparations. Born in Charleston Missouri he moved to Kern County in 1942 and resides near Shafter with wife Ruey and daughters. He also holds multiple farming and community roles including Richland Coop Gin director and Kern County Farm Bureau board member.
Leon Wilkins and Adele Wilkins of 514 South Shafter Avenue were hurt when their motorcycle was struck by a car on the Central Valley Highway near Seventh Standard Road. Charles Cot ton, 57, of 30505 Orange Avenue, Shafter, was jailed on felony drunk driving charges.
The City Fire Department responded to a fire at 439 West Ash Street involving a gas clothes dryer and its contents. The wall behind the dryer sustained slight damage. The County Fire Department also attended two fires Saturday, one at Edwards Tract 161 East Ash involving trash.
A juvenile faces charges after police say they possessed trading stamps valued at $25 at the Douglas service station. Investigators report the stamps were found during a routine check. The case proceeds through the local juvenile court.
Frank H Wisner notes Bud Johnson and H C Hight fished Akter creek last weekend with five fish reported. Hem Bank store construction began Monday. Rumor hints a new tenant next to City Furniture, though the paper jokes about its future. The column mentions ad machine issues delaying publication.
