Wasco constable Joe English shot dead in pool hall murder
J E English 40 of Wasco slain with four bullets while talking with a friend in a crowded Wasco pool hall. J W Crabtree 23 of Wasco held in Kern County jail on murder charges after deputies rushed him to safety. Crabtree allegedly fired four shots, two in the chest and two in the back, then fled as a mob formed. English died with his gun in hand. Funeral services were held at the Wasco Congregational church. English had served as constable since 1935 and was active in Masons Eagles and the American Legion.

Fire truck shown in Shafter as new facility planned
A modern fire truck from Bakersfield was shown in Shafter Tuesday as officials plan a new fire station. C E Freear, assistant state fire ranger, checked on land bought for the site and said the Oakdale built truck will be ready in three weeks and moved to temporary quarters during the two stall adobe station with WPA funds. Supervisor Roy Wook Jomes helped acquire the protection at no cost to the district.

Two Injured In Collision At Shafter Library Corner
P J Karber and C Martindale sustained cuts and bruises from an automobile crash near the Shafter library corner about 5 30 Tuesday evening. Karber drove his car while Martindale rode with J F Shannan who was driving another vehicle. Shannan and Martindale, new arrivals in North Shafter, were not speeding, officers reported. Karber’s car suffered extensive damage with a rear wheel demolished.

Man Killed By Freight Train Near Here
An unidentified man was ground to death beneath the wheels of a Santa Fe freight train between Shafter and Wasco, late Tuesday night. He had been riding a westbound freight and fell. The body was found by an eastbound crew a few minutes later. Authorities seek identity by fingerprinting.
