A major blaze destroyed the King Lumber Company yard and damaged the Santa Fe depot in Shafter. Firefighters fought the flames overnight with aid from Bakersfield forestry trucks and Santa Fe locomotives. Insurance covers most losses estimated around $30,000.
Justice of the Peace F E Mannel presided in East Bakersfield last Friday and Monday due to Judge Frank Miergo's vacation. Mannel also covered Wasco court duties while Judge Allery enjoys a fortnight off, alongside his own docket and a wedding ceremony, keeping him busier than a one eyed dog in a sausage store.
There will be no well baby clinic held this month. The next clinic will occur on the fourth Friday in September.
A Landon Knox club will be formed in Shafter at the Legion hall at 8 o clock tomorrow evening. Representatives of the Tenth Congressional district Republican organization will be present and all Republicans and others interested in the candidacy of Landon and Knox are invited. The meeting marks the start of the 1936 national campaign.
The man killed by a Santa Fe freight train last week is identified as Ellis Rhone. Constable John Reily facilitated the identification through acquaintances who knew him during his two months in the locality. Rhone came from Oklahoma and was employed at the Hoover farm when he was struck, while walking from Wasco to his work.
Warren Chapple, 15, of Shafter, was injured when he was thrown from a car driven by his brother W T Chapple, 19, about two miles south of Shafter. He remained in serious condition at Kern General Hospital Bakersfield with back injuries severe bruises and possible skull fracture after being hurled from the bumper when a rough spot struck the road.
Benjamin Eichman of Shafter and Miss Ella Deal of Shafter were married by Justice of the Peace F. E. Manuel in his courtroom at 10 o'clock Saturday morning. Witnesses were J. R. Friesen and Mrs. Lena Friesen. This marks the third ceremony officiated by Judge Manuel in his term.
Residents watched as flames threatened multiple buildings in Shafter during the early minutes of a large fire. The tense first thirty minutes tested hopes of saving shops and livelihoods as embers sparked concern citywide.
Jacob Spitzer, 45, was killed instantly in a two vehicle crash at Leide Road and Santa Fe Avenue in Shafter. Ed Kirschenmann, his son in law, escaped with minor injuries. the other driver Wayne Thomas, 30, of Maywood, was uninjured. Spitzer’s car was wrecked and he died en route to Kern General Hospital. Funeral services were held at the Reformed church with interment in Shafter cemetery.
The California fish and game bureau plans a $100,000 fish rescue plant and hatcheries fifteen miles from Sacramento on thirty acres to conserve spiny ray species. When rivers dry in summer the facility will rescue bass, catfish and others from the Sacramento and tributaries. Larger fish stay for brooding while smaller are released later. each tank houses two ponds for continuous operation. Fish placement begins next year after curing.
An air transportation company in San Francisco unveils a new romantic travel package. The program markets a Cupid themed experience with discounted fares and included perks for couples seeking a unique city getaway.
Four Shafter residents were in an automobile accident at Delano that fatally injured a harvest hand aboard a truck carrying 17 workers. Mrs. Nola Madewell 34 and her sons John 14 Muriel 16 were injured. Bryant Bailey 26 also involved. John Madewell is in critical condition at Kern General Hospital.
Emil Stoller president of the Shefter Business Men's Association testified at a state railroad commission hearing in Bakersfield on the Santa Fe Transportation Co. intrastate bus-operations application. The association recently endorsed the Santa Fe proposal.
Johnnie Jung, famed chef formerly with the Golden State Cafe in Bakersfield, joins Valentine's Cafe in Shafter and will begin serving chow mein and chop suey starting Saturday. The move brings Chinese cuisine closer to local diners, sparing a trip to Bakersfield.
B. F. Davis lost his home and belongings in a recent fire. Neighbors led by local business men collected $47.80 in cash and additional in-kind contributions totaling about $20 to help him start anew.
Jesse W. Crabtree was bound over at Wasco after a brief preliminary hearing before Justice of the Peace. He was unable to present a defense. Constable Joe English led Crabtree to the holding cell following the hearing.
Fred MacMurray and Carole Lombard headline the new film The Princess Comes Across opening at the Airdome. Lombard stars as a Swedish princess posing as an American girl who falls for MacMurray aboard a transatlantic liner. The plot features two murders and their solution amid a high seas romance.
Judge F E Manuel says Leonard McClintock, who ran against Stanley Abel in the fourth district, formerly resided in Shafter. He notes McClintock’s father owned about 80 acres near the site of the current high school.
Director Ray Ingels announces Paul Mason, formerly with the state board of equalization, as chief of the division of drivers licenses and adjustments in the Department of Motor Vehicles. Mason replaces Russel Bevans who resigned to take a federal post.
Stockton chosen as the 1937 convention city for the Improved Order of Red Men. Thomas D. Jackson of Martinez was elected great sachem of the California organization, succeeding the retired leader.
State labor commissioner Edward L. Nolan says July employment rose 8.7 percent from a year earlier in San Francisco. He cites a 9.2 percent increase in total man hours and a 16 percent rise in payroll volume.
California Institute of Technology officials seek a prohibition on lights within a three mile radius to prevent disturbance to the 200 inch telescope at Palomar Observatory.
A fire swept through the Metho dist church in Grass Valley, badly damaged the 1872 structure and leaving plans for a new building in progress. Local crews battled flames as the church suffered extensive destruction.
In the first supervisorial district Roy Woollames topped H A Rightmire and George Branch with 2 086 votes to 464 and 344 respectively, securing renomination. In the fourth district Leonard McClintock leads Stanley Abel with Abels supporters awaiting absent ballots. Bradshaw holds a substantial lead over Welsh with Taylor at 1 663, and Turner wins Democratic and Republican nominations for assembly. George Elisa appears poised for Republican nomination in the tenth district.
