Police Chief Hoffer, longtime Shafter leader since 1981, accepts the Cottage Grove Oregon post effective September 1 1963. He relocates with his wife Judy to a city of 30 000 residents in a 800 000 budget department employing 23, joining a two week P O S T academy. He praises career advancement and looks forward to new laws and court systems while Cottage Grove air and lumber economy frame his lifestyle move.

Transient Lamothe found dead in Shafter jail cell
A 47 year old male identified as David Roland Lamothe died after being found unresponsive in a Shafter jail cell early August 8 1983. He had been arrested for a welfare check after a passerby reported a man passed out on North Shafter Avenue. Lamothe was placed in a jail cell to sober up and was seen sleeping before two separate welfare checks revealed he stopped breathing. Paramedics started CPR and Hall's Ambulance took him to Kern Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Autopsy results are pending with a toxology report to follow in about two weeks. The Shafter Police Department plans to review procedures to prevent future shortfalls.
