Origin of Shafter Adobes Reveals Early Builders and Techniques
The article traces who built Shafter adobos, naming Otto Becker and his family as early builders of 1931s Beech Street home for Ted Hoeger and several others in the 1930s. It notes contributions by Jesse Crettel of Wasco and his crew on Shafter Station properties and two Manuel Avenue houses, plus experiments by Abraham Neufeld. It frames the craft as shaped by clay availability, labor, and the era’s conditions, highlighting a regional heritage of adobe construction.
