Research Station funding faces uncertain future

The U.S. Senate agrees to fund the Shafter Cotton Research Station for another year while a Senate report warns it could end after 1980. House restored 240000 and approved 1 million for pink bollworm eradication and 700000 for USDA beetle control. Senate cut beetle funding to 300000 and rejected pink bollworm funds. The plant seed distributor cooperative may run the station, with state takeover unlikely. A California bill to repeal the one-variety law seeks an Acala Cotton Board to impose seed standards, responding to Justice Department concerns over seed distribution.
