The Shafter recreation program drew nearly 27000 attendees for 13 weeks of softball and other activities. Over 400 participants joined in ball games plus arts, crafts, swimming, and community night programs. Roy Farrell directed the effort with a capable team and a citizen committee led by Jack Hi, establishing a lasting community recreation effort.
Paul Garret and his Orchestra will provide the music for a Teen Age Dance at the Woman's Clubhouse tonight. The previous teen event held two weeks ago drew enthusiastic receipts, prompting a second dance with a full orchestra.
The Kern County Union High School District board adopted a 3,537,285 dollar budget for 1947-48, projecting a tax rate drop from 91 to 70 cents per 100 dollars, excluding bond taxes. Revenue from outside sources totals about 1,004,717 dollars, leaving 1,678,367.78 dollars to be raised locally. The plan relies on increased state apportionments and higher attendance. The board hired five new teachers and authorized bus motor replacements and steel bleachers for several high schools.
Bessie Flores, age 2, died Wednesday at Kern General Hospital. Born January 29, 1945 in Bakersfield, she lived in Shafter with parents Mr. and Mrs. Jacinto Flores. Janzen Funeral Home handling services with 3 p.m. funeral and graveside burial at Shafter Cemetery.
Mr and Mrs Lorn H Bryant announce the birth of a son at Mercy Hospital on August 6 weighing 6 pounds 6 ounces.
Funeral services are set for Mrs Marie Burkhart 90 in the Mennonite Brethren church with burial in Shafter Cemetery. She died Wednesday after residing in California 50 years formerly of Reedley Kern County four years with surviving sons Conrad Jake Burkhart Loveland Colorado Jack Burkhart Anaheim CA, daughters Mrs A F Beese Shafter and Mrs Marie Klingenberg Whittier, 27 grandchildren and many great and great greats. Revs J J Wiebe and H D Wiebe will officiate.
Wasco resident Rebecca Woodards aged seven years in Wasco died Wednesday in a Bakersfield hospital. Janzen Funeral Home handles arrangements. Burial will be in Wasco Cemetery. She is survived by her daughter Hattie Maxine Herring of Wasco.

The Bill Johnstons postpone a planned two week trip to Pismo Beach as their eight year old Johnny contracts mumps.
Shafter High School adds a farm mechanics shop and agricultural class room using a former link trainer site at Gardner Field. The building and war surplus equipment including planes joiners band saws and pressers were secured from the Army at a fraction of market price, with alterations boosting study space and desks. Principal Jack Hill expects about 500 students enrolled when classes open September 3.
Clarence Miller, chief officer of the Kern County Detention Home, spoke to the Shafter Kiwanis at Cawelo Motel detailing 1938 capacity for under 20 children, now repeatedly housing three to four times that number. He cited Grand Jury actions to fund expansion, property hurdles, and repeated inaction by the Board of Supervisors and Governor Warren, with plans stalled over land acquisition from the Warren estate.
The Kiwanis Rotary softball clash II was postponed after a pre game meeting due to Rotary fielding a weak squad with top players on vacation. Each club has won one game this season and the postponed title tilt would crown the 1947 service club softball champions of Shafter.
Norman Voth son of Mrs Mary Voth arrived home last Sunday after serving as a Sergeant in the Air Corps stationed in Germany authorities.
A public thank you to the people and groups who supported the Community Recreation program. Rec staff Ray Eilis Bernis Morrie Lorraine Klein kauf Slyvia Dona Baugh man led the effort with enthusiasm. The Recreation Commission under Chairman Jack Hill aided all undertakings. A bouquet to Earl Weill Dutch Newton and Ivan Stone for helping as needed. Vernon Pierce and the Fire bers of the 20 30 Club assisted umpiring. Local business men offered financial and moral support and community participation.
Shafter Farm Labor Camps Inc, a new non profit growers group, wins authorization to sign a revocable use permit with the U S Department of Agriculture to operate the two government camps from Sept 30 through Dec 31 under existing rules. Merrill Thomas and Harold Miller to sign. Herbert Neuman named vice president.
The Shafter recreation summer program ends with 82 average daily attendees over ten weeks. Students made rug pieces, baskets, pottery, tin crafts, woodwork, bead work, and paper mache, culminating in an open house with 200-plus visitors. An average of 67 children joined the afternoon playground, with weekly games and a popular Friday bicycle race. Staff included Roy Farrell as director, Ray Kitts in publicity, Lorraine Kleinkauf and Bernie Morris in arts and crafts, Dana Baughman as assistant, and Sylvia Baughman as cafeteria manager.
More than two thousand people attended eleven summer programs in Shafter’s recreation series. The events ran weekly on Tuesday evenings from June 3 to last Tuesday, held on the high school gym porch with audiences outside. Highlights included a baby show with 57 entrants and six division prizes plus a grand prize to Sandra McCoy, and a large hobby show with over 500 visitors and multiple prizewinners.
