Shafter city council weighs modernizing the WWII curfew ordinance as teens urge relief. At a July meeting Bill Hatcher’s government class backed a petition to extend hours, citing late events as reason and police ease. The council is expected to act soon.
The Shafter thermometer stayed under 100 for the second straight week with Aug 8 as the peak and Aug 3 5 6 showing a 56 degree low. Soil highs reached 83 and nights dipped to 75 on Aug 4 5 alongside daily readings from the U S Cotton Research Station.VA official Martin J May reports home loan and appraisal requests fell in July with declines from June levels.
Century Convalescent Centers now runs 19 facilities in California with 11 in Los Angeles County and three in Orange County. It recently leased the 72 bed Shafter hospital at 140 E Tulare St and will keep current operations. Shafter merchants join forces for a two day Back to School Dollars Day and Sidewalk Sale on Friday and Saturday August 14 and 15. Wares will be displayed along the sidewalks with special prices plus free carnival rides for children. A free merchandise prize drawing at 6 p.m. Saturday ends the event at James and Central avenues.
Principal Jordan Kanikkeberg reports budget cuts at Shafter High School due to insufficient district funding. Among the changes are elimination of four and a half teaching staff positions, 22 class areas mostly elective, and five physical education periods. Only about 35 percent of students may enroll in six classes, creating gaps in the day.

Dorothy Irene Eckmann 62 of 356 Manuel Ave Shafter died August 5 in a Pasadena hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral held August 7 at Union Congregational Church Shafter with burial at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Survived by husband E C Eckmann son James Eckmann daughter Joan Ryan and three sisters. memorials to Union Congregational Church memorial fund.
