Polymer plant to boost Shafter economy this summer

Polymer Corporation will erect a starch plant in Shafter this summer with operation starting late fall. The project is expected to generate about 1 million dollars annually in purchases from local potato growers and create significant employment and economic activity for the community.

Richland School District Approves 1970 71 Budget

Richland School District trustees adopted the 1,261,926 budget after a public hearing. Superintendent David Cooke noted tentative figures, revised the loss in assessed valuation to 533,240, and will send the budget to Kern County for review and approval.

Temperatures Hold Below Century Mark in Shafter Week

Weather notes from Shafter show no day reached 100 degrees. The week peaked at 98 on Monday July 27 with 90 as the day low on Sunday Aug 2 and two overnight lows at 54 degrees. Soil highs reached 84 while nights averaged 74 at the U S Cotton Research Station. Continued on page six.

Shafter District Split Urged By Parent Study Group

A Parent Curriculum committee report filed August 1 recommends separating Shafter from Kern County School District to form a new unified district including Shafter High School and all Shafter elementary schools. It calls reducing administrators, rechanneling funds to curriculum, abolishing tenure, and using Shafter to promote principals, with concerns about old equipment and buses.

Shafter Night Draws Crowd in Bakersfield Baseball Exhibition

At Sam Lynn Park Bakersfield about 500 Shafter fans attended Shafter Night as the Bakersfield Dodgers defeated Visalia Mets 3 0. The Dodgers extended their half season lead while two Visalia errors in the first inning and an eighth inning home run secured the win. Merchants donated merchandise prizes for the Shafter fans.

Civil Defense Siren Test Set For Thursday

The Shafter Fire Department will test the Civil Defense siren on Thursday August 6 at 9 30 a m Fire Chief Clifford Ratzlaff announced repairs and maintenance have been done to the alarm system and the department wants to ensure proper operation.

Back 10 School Dollar Days Set for August 14 15

Shafter merchants plan a two day Back to School Dollar Days and sidewalk sale on August 14 and 15. Lee Fike announces carnival rides for children with ride tickets donated by participating merchants and a free merchandise drawing at 6 p.m. Saturday at James and Central Avenue.

Grady Bartlett to Head C of C Rose Festival Float

Grady Bartlett was named chairman of the Shafter Chamber of Commerce Rose Festival float committee at a breakfast meeting. Dorothy Whisler and Bill Pitcher of Gro-Plant Industries were named co chairman and committee member respectively, with GPI supplying roses for the float. The parade theme is The Magical Kingdom of Roses, set for Wasco on September 12. The next committee meeting is August 7 at 7 a.m. at the Shafter Motel.

Shafter Issues June Building Permits Totaling 129 433

City records show Shafter issued building permits in July totaling 129 433. Six permits went to the Housing Authority of Kern County for six units on Los Angeles Ave. Other permits covered residential remodeling and new pools for individuals including Robert Osborn and Bryan White. Business remodels include Dari Delite and Community Bank among others.
