Rev Gordon J Baker to Leave Shafter for Buena Park Parish
The Rev Gordon J Baker will conduct his last service at Shafter Union Congregational Church on September 12 before becoming pastor of First Congregational Christian Church in Buena Park. He arrived in Shafter December 1 1948 and oversaw church growth including a new building dedicated in May 1951 at Tulare and Sycamore. Baker notes the town’s growth plans and housing projects ahead as Buena Park expands near Los Angeles with Knott's Berry Farm nearby. He will reside temporarily at 7852 Court St until a new parsonage is found. While in Shafter he led vacation Bible school and served in local ministerial groups and migrant commission.

Shafter's Sharp Shooters Junior Rifle Association will meet Monday at 3 p.m. at Instructor Richard J. Scott's home to form a rifle squad after being challenged by the Wasco club. The group recently received four caliber 22 rifles from the Director of Civilian Marksmanship and invites youths aged 12 to 18. A hunting license or Hunter Safety Course certificate is required for eligibility.
