The Shafter 20-30 Club hosted 116 members from Arvin Taft Delano Oildale Bakersfield and Wasco for Sub-District No 5. Greg Malory was re elected Sub District Governor. The group planned support for O D Handel as International Trustee and discussed the Catalina convention.

Shafter Rotary Club members at a Tuesday luncheon watched a color film on Hawaii sugar cane from planting to sugar production. President Glenn Nay led the meeting with vice president Dr. Harold Freedman presiding in his absence. Visitors H A Kohfeld Ray Sirman Melvin McConnell and guests J C Reaves Jr Fred Bryant T P Rootes were noted.
Mr and Mrs Lick Larson plan a weekend visit at Pismo Beach to spend time with the Elmer Andersons and Jim Moquists.
Harold Roe Collins 22 of Shafter driving north on Santa Fe Way at 40 mph swung left to avoid a car entering the road and struck a parked vehicle 90 feet north of Kimberlina Road. Five injured to Kern General with minor injuries. Others involved include Alvie Jewel Black 32 of Shafter and Wasco resident Margaret Gore 22.
Christina Reich who died Sunday at 224 Ash Street will have services Friday at 10 a m at the German Reform Church with Rev. Mrs Harold Greene and children Pudgy and Sissy travel with Mrs Greene's parents and sister Mr and Mrs B B Smith and Beverly of Fresno for August at San Clemente near San Juan Capistrano. Mr Greene drove them to the city last weekend and will join for the final two weeks of August.
Jim Gloeckler left Saturday for a two week vacation to Lake Arrowhead. He will be met at the resort by friends from Los Angeles. Mr Glockler is employed at the office of Emmanuel H. Mettler & Sons.
Mr and Mrs Carl Graves and Mr and Mrs Miller Beach were weekend visitors at Pismo Beach enjoying coastal scenery and seaside dining.

A 20-year-old Shafter man and four local juveniles face charges for providing alcohol to minors. The adult received two years probation and a 150 dollar fine to avoid 180 days in a county road camp after allegedly purchasing six beers July 29. Juveniles include two fourteen year olds and two fifteen year olds. one minor remains in a juvenile home on probation. Police referred the case to juvenile authorities.
A two story ranch home near Healdsburg owned by Mr and Mrs Victor Newfield former Shafterites was destroyed by a fire likely from faulty wiring. A washing machine kitchen range and a freezer full of turkeys were salvaged. No casualties. the Newfields reside temporarily in a new home with an employee’s family. Mr Newfield is Menno Siemans’ brother and runs a turkey ranch about six miles from Healdsburg.
Mrs Velma Brock departed Wednesday for a week in Los Angeles to stay with her sister and brother in law Mr and Mrs Welch Teague at their home.
Mr and Mrs Jim Gleeckler recently returned from a weeklong vacation to San Francisco. They traveled home via the coast route stopping for a couple of days at Pismo.

A 1941 gas truck and a true tractor were destroyed by fire early Wednesday at 6 am seven and a half miles south of Shafter on Santa Fe Way. Dennis O Connell of Bakersfield owned the damaged vehicle. Fire officials cite a broken gas tank bracket that loosened the tank, struck pavement, and ignited the blaze.
Frank Johnson presented colored slides to the Shafter Kiwanis club at their Wednesday meeting. Johnson, stationed in Berlin after WWII with the U S Army, shared Europe images and local Shafter views along with Kiwanis picnic photos. The program was led by Joe Frizzell in President Hill’s absence, with Hanley Witcher as vice-president and Frank O Neil as chairman and projector operator.
Four month old Barbara Jane Thompson died August 2 in a hospital. Born in St. Louis on March 21, she lived in Sawyerville near Shafter with her parents Mr. and Mrs. James Thompson for two months. Services were held August 5 at 10 a.m. by Rev. A. D. Sallee at Flickinger Janzen Mortuary chapel, burial in Shafter Cemetery.
Overnight guests at the Martin Anderson residence were Mrs. Andersons brother and his wife Mr. and Mrs. Ed Howard of Highland Park. They were returning from a months long trip across the United States. Mr. Howard was surprised to see a newsreel in a New Jersey movie showing Shafter potato cultivation and digging.

Mr and Mrs Bob Tatum Mr and Mrs Verlin Mouser and son Larry fished Ten Mile Lake near Reedsport Oregon for two hours using 48 worms and caught 72 perch and catfish, then added sturgeon on the Columbia River. Total from two trips reported as 125 fish with local disbelief.
Minor injuries to Y. C. Young of South Shafter Labor Camp and Lillian Jones of Buttonwillow were treated at 3:00 am yesterday after their car drove off an unbarriered Lerdo Road embankment. A torn bridge and missing barriers contributed to the accident eight miles west of town. flare failures were noted. Both occupants were shaken but not seriously hurt.

Virginia "Sis" Anderson left Sunday for a week's vacation at her aunt Mrs. Tom Tuble's home in Burbank. She will visit her brother Don Anderson of Inglewood and is to return to Shafter this weekend.
