Slome Alvidrez Dies at 69 in Buttonwillow

Slome Alvidrez, 69, died at home Tuesday morning. He lived at 235 East 1st Street, Buttonwillow. Services set for Saturday at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Buttonwillow, at 10 a.m. Father Richards to attend. Burial at Bakersfield Memorial Park the same day. Shafter Funeral Home handles arrangements.

The Shafter Press announces a new publication day every Thursday with afternoon and Friday morning issues. City subscribers will receive by 5:00 p.m. Thursday and local boxholders will find papers in boxes late afternoon. An extension equal to double the length of time will be granted.

Mrs E Ohanneson Passes in Fresno

Elizabeth Ohanneson 85 of Fresno mother of Phil and A Peter Ohanneson of Shafter and the late Joe C Ohanneson died Sunday at her Fresno home Service held Tuesday at First Armenian Presbyterian Church of Fresno of which she was a charter member and last surviving founder of the Ladies Aid Society She came to Fresno in 1888 and lived there 62 years Surviving children include N Ohanneson George Ohanneson Dr Frank Ohanneson Dr John Ohanneson Mary Donabedian Lucy White a sister two brothers 18 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren

Aquacade Show Ends Weekly Swim Course in Richland

A large Aquacade Show will be staged Friday night at the Richland Aquatic Center under Roy Farrell director of the new Recreation Program. The event showcases a 10 week Red Cross swimming course with five divisions led by instructors Tom Kelly Dick Heber Marge Olson Mrs dy Coleman and Roy Farrell.

Bank of America Branch to Open Sept 8 in New Building

The Shafter Bank of America moves to a new, 1300 square foot larger facility, with four officer desks and an expanded lobby. Edm und Chase of Capital Company says interior will be ultra modern with updated banking equipment. Phil Clarkin reports one additional teller and staff remains unchanged except for positions listed.

Firestone opens new Richland store near Chevrolet agency

The Firestone store debuts in Richland in the former Shafter Radio building beside Richland Chevrolet and opposite Courtesy Food Market. Owned by the same firm as Richland Chevrolet, the location offers Firestone tires batteries and home and auto supplies, plus Western Holly ranges and Thor washers. The opening celebration and sale run this week with a move to the new quarters completed by weekend.

Final Approval on Buttonwillow Co Building Granted

Final approval for the Health Welfare Building in Buttonwillow was given by the Board of Supervisors. A $57,000 county project would house a justice court and constable’s office and other community spaces. Public Works Director Chester A. James presented final plans, which were approved after objection from Supervisor Charles P. Salzer, who called the design too elaborate before revisions.

Committees Named at Shafter Legion Meeting

The Shafter American Legion Post held a Monday meeting naming key committees for the coming year. Rem Bristow was tapped as chairman with Bristow also chairing Graves Registration and Child Welfare while Jack Janzen led Boys State and George Collins Public Relations. Other chairs include J M Banks Finances Gene Guenther Housing Jack Hare Building and entertainment chairs Irvin Nickel LaVerne Kliewer Claude Camp. The group also approved repairs to the post pool tables and planned ongoing Teen Age dance discussions.

Neuman's Horses Win at Sportsman's Park Chicago

At Sportsman's Park in Chicago last week the Neuman horses owned by Robert Neuman of Shafter won two events. Carroll Dale captured the 16 Pace for a $1000 purse with a 2 10 time, and Pat Lee won the 17 Trot for an $800 purse with a 2 14 time. Neil Boardman was the driver for both winners.

Last Rites Held For Mrs. Dodgen

Funeral services for Mrs. Florence Dodgen 61 of Wasco were held at the Robert L. Jones Chapel Wasco. She died July 23 at her Wasco home after a six year Wasco residence. Surviving are her husband Joe W. Dodgen two sons Jack of Shafter and Wesley in Missouri three daughters Effie O Neal May Dunlap and Marie Gallaher all of Wasco. Burial was in Shafter Cemetery with arrangements by Robert L. Jones Funeral Home.

Hiatt Named New Manager at Rasco Store

Edward W. Hiatt takes over as manager at the Rasco 5-10-25c store, arriving from Calexico after a long retail career with F W Woolworth and Rasco. He has served in the Army Air Force and held multiple Rasco posts including Calexico and Bell before relocating to Shafter for permanent residence.

Seminary Professor To Speak At Local Church Sunday

Rev. James Christian of Western Baptist Theological Seminary in Portland will be guest speaker at First Baptist Church this Sunday while the pastor is away on vacation. Local Grower Ordered to Repay $1500 Lease Money

Mrs. Sarah Foust of Shafter was ordered to reimburse $1,500 plus $140 interest to Wilkin of Modesto after a suit over an 80 acre lease near here. Trial records show Foust agreed to install pumping equipment for water to enable a potato crop. the equipment was not installed and the balance was not paid. Superior Judge Robert B. Lambert found no further facts and ordered repayment.
