Laguna Beach hosts its annual Festival of Arts through August 14 with booths and crafts. the Pageant of the Masters draws crowds for living pictures recreated with meticulous detail and performances. It showcases hundreds of volunteers, elaborate costumes, and a dramatic finale of the Last Supper while praising beauty and enduring values.
Slome Alvidrez, 69, died at home Tuesday morning. He lived at 235 East 1st Street, Buttonwillow. Services set for Saturday at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Buttonwillow, at 10 a.m. Father Richards to attend. Burial at Bakersfield Memorial Park the same day. Shafter Funeral Home handles arrangements.
The Shafter Press announces a new publication day every Thursday with afternoon and Friday morning issues. City subscribers will receive by 5:00 p.m. Thursday and local boxholders will find papers in boxes late afternoon. An extension equal to double the length of time will be granted.
Elizabeth Ohanneson 85 of Fresno mother of Phil and A Peter Ohanneson of Shafter and the late Joe C Ohanneson died Sunday at her Fresno home Service held Tuesday at First Armenian Presbyterian Church of Fresno of which she was a charter member and last surviving founder of the Ladies Aid Society She came to Fresno in 1888 and lived there 62 years Surviving children include N Ohanneson George Ohanneson Dr Frank Ohanneson Dr John Ohanneson Mary Donabedian Lucy White a sister two brothers 18 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren
A large Aquacade Show will be staged Friday night at the Richland Aquatic Center under Roy Farrell director of the new Recreation Program. The event showcases a 10 week Red Cross swimming course with five divisions led by instructors Tom Kelly Dick Heber Marge Olson Mrs dy Coleman and Roy Farrell.
The Shafter Bank of America moves to a new, 1300 square foot larger facility, with four officer desks and an expanded lobby. Edm und Chase of Capital Company says interior will be ultra modern with updated banking equipment. Phil Clarkin reports one additional teller and staff remains unchanged except for positions listed.
The Firestone store debuts in Richland in the former Shafter Radio building beside Richland Chevrolet and opposite Courtesy Food Market. Owned by the same firm as Richland Chevrolet, the location offers Firestone tires batteries and home and auto supplies, plus Western Holly ranges and Thor washers. The opening celebration and sale run this week with a move to the new quarters completed by weekend.
Final approval for the Health Welfare Building in Buttonwillow was given by the Board of Supervisors. A $57,000 county project would house a justice court and constable’s office and other community spaces. Public Works Director Chester A. James presented final plans, which were approved after objection from Supervisor Charles P. Salzer, who called the design too elaborate before revisions.
Shafter 20 30 club members discuss amendments and election of a new sub district governor for the Bakersfield sub district. The group will hold a 7 p m meeting at Bakersfield and skip their regular Wednesday session.
The Shafter American Legion Post held a Monday meeting naming key committees for the coming year. Rem Bristow was tapped as chairman with Bristow also chairing Graves Registration and Child Welfare while Jack Janzen led Boys State and George Collins Public Relations. Other chairs include J M Banks Finances Gene Guenther Housing Jack Hare Building and entertainment chairs Irvin Nickel LaVerne Kliewer Claude Camp. The group also approved repairs to the post pool tables and planned ongoing Teen Age dance discussions.
Corwin A. Johns and Harry B. Nelson announce the opening of Buttonwillow Bakery at 134 Front Street Buttonwillow. Johns a longtime Buttonwillow businessman and Justice of the Peace. Nelson formerly with Van Camp's Bakers in Southern California.

A Friday night teen age dance sponsored by the Shafter American Legion post will run from 8 p.m. at the Women’s Clubhouse Sunset and James Streets. Legionnaires Rem Bristow and Blackie Waymire lead the event with Bill Earley and his orchestra providing music and root beer served by Bristow and Nick Johnson.
Mr and Mrs Bob McClain and children drove to Los Angeles last weekend to attend the wedding of D H Sanders Jr the McClains were joined by Mrs Bill McClain. They attended a buffet supper Saturday evening hosted by D H Sanders and his wife for relatives and friends who traveled south for the ceremony.
At Sportsman's Park in Chicago last week the Neuman horses owned by Robert Neuman of Shafter won two events. Carroll Dale captured the 16 Pace for a $1000 purse with a 2 10 time, and Pat Lee won the 17 Trot for an $800 purse with a 2 14 time. Neil Boardman was the driver for both winners.
Derr, an All American Penn State football star and former Hanford Chamber manager, has been named secretary manager of the Stockton Chamber of Commerce. A noted speaker, he will lead local civic discussions with extensive baseball and professional sports background.
Mayor P. V. McClure responded to the budget committee urging an immediate tax cut. The absence of two councilmen prevented action. Theater Bakersfield official Richard Leask urged Shafter to enter a float for the County Fair Centennial parade on September 27.
Open air community night show at a high school features Janet Davis acrobatic dance the Kelley Brothers Donald Crawford and the Hallet sisters in dancing and tap acts a 20 piece accordion band led by Jim Fleming Bakersfield and a final hillbilly feature by the Brassarett quintet all Bakersfield talent. Event aligns with Shafter Summer Recreation Program no admission charged starts at 7 p.m.
Funeral services for Mrs. Florence Dodgen 61 of Wasco were held at the Robert L. Jones Chapel Wasco. She died July 23 at her Wasco home after a six year Wasco residence. Surviving are her husband Joe W. Dodgen two sons Jack of Shafter and Wesley in Missouri three daughters Effie O Neal May Dunlap and Marie Gallaher all of Wasco. Burial was in Shafter Cemetery with arrangements by Robert L. Jones Funeral Home.
Edward W. Hiatt takes over as manager at the Rasco 5-10-25c store, arriving from Calexico after a long retail career with F W Woolworth and Rasco. He has served in the Army Air Force and held multiple Rasco posts including Calexico and Bell before relocating to Shafter for permanent residence.
Rev. James Christian of Western Baptist Theological Seminary in Portland will be guest speaker at First Baptist Church this Sunday while the pastor is away on vacation. Christian visits from Los Angeles with his wife and 14 month old daughter Alice. The two pastors were close friends from their seminary days in Philadelphia. All are invited to attend.
A formal church ceremony will unite Miss Beverly Helen Duke of Shafter and Doyle Houston Adcock of Wasco in a First Methodist Church ceremony Sunday at seven o'clock. The couple will be joined by family and close friends in Wasco.
Mrs. Sarah Foust of Shafter was ordered to reimburse $1,500 plus $140 interest to Wilkin of Modesto after a suit over an 80 acre lease near here. Trial records show Foust agreed to install pumping equipment for water to enable a potato crop. the equipment was not installed and the balance was not paid. Superior Judge Robert B. Lambert found no further facts and ordered repayment.
Elmer Lewis Mettler of 202 Atlantic Street Shafter and Miss Geraldine Rae Forsyth of 906 Brundage Lane Bakersfield will marry this Sunday at two o clock in Ebenezer Reformed Church Shafter. Rev Klaudt will perform the ceremony.
