City permits issued last month authorize rebuilding Justesen's Market and Sprouse-Reitz 5 and 10 cent store at their former sites after the June fire that caused about 200000 in damages. Justesen's will be rebuilt by former owner Jake Neufeld at a cost of 18000, Sprouse-Reitz by F J Christensen at 17000. Local Woman and Son Arrested in Dyer Act Plot
FBI agents arrested Loretta Anderson 41 and son James Lester Daniels 22 of Shafter on charges of plotting to help a federal prisoner escape. They were booked in Kern County Jail with $2,500 bond. another son Charles Daniels is jailed in Albuquerque for related violations.

Fire Picture Contest Winners Named in Shafter Event
Winners of the Justesen Sprouse Reitz fire picture contest were announced by the Shafter City Fire Department. Carl Gunnarson won 16 mm honors. Bess Williams topped 8 mm. Dan Loewen led the still shot division. Honorable mentions went to Adams, Laughton, Roberts, and Loepp. Immigrant raid teams in Kern County rounded up over 30 illegal Mexican workers.

More than seventy five youths attended Friday’s Teen Age Dance at the Women's Clubhouse sponsored by the Shafter American Legion post. About 10 gallons of punch were consumed and a door prize a 5 by 7 portrait from Sharp's Studio was won by Billy Hinsley. Music played by Bill Earley's dance band with legion chaperones listed.

Shafters accomplished pianist Mrs Cathryn Putman on KWHW
Mrs Cathryn Putman and her brother Glen Skipper Miller appeared on an all request program at station KWHW Altus Oklahoma. The duo performed a special show then a 30 minute all request segment which extended to another 30 minutes as 150 calls poured in. Skipper Miller, a longtime Altus resident and railroad employee, is a frequent radio guest. Putman formerly ran a piano and dance studio in the city and remains a noted community talent.

Jesse Elmore Killed in Train Collision Near Kimberlina Crossing
Shafter resident Jesse Ambrose Elmore, 57, died early Tuesday when his car collided with a Southern Pacific passenger train at the Kimberlina Road crossing near Highway 99. Witness Walter F. Davis of Weed Patch said Elmore appeared to fail to see the oncoming engine and the car was thrown more than 300 feet. the body remained at the scene with funeral arrangements pending at Robert L. Jones Funeral Home in Wasco.

Earliest Ever Cotton Picking Eyeing Kern County Start
Kern County expects the 1949 cotton crop to be the earliest on record with picking in the Shafter district by September 16.
