The Shafter Press will publish weekly starting next week on Thursdays with home delivery by 5:30 p.m. Subscribers gain a double extension equal to what they have paid. The change stems from high production costs and aims to resume twice weekly publication when feasible.
Last day to enter the Sprouse Reitz Adamson contest. Entries include 16 mm films by Adamson and an 8 mm reel by Bess Williams for a $10 prize. Submit best fire scene shots to Kern County Fire at Dicken Avenue in Shafter.
Billy Montgomery twelve and Dennis Jackson eleven, both from Shafter, left their homes about 8 30 p m. Montgomery lives at De Witt Camp Shafter Jackson at 401 Classen Street North Shafter. An all points bulletin was issued statewide for the boys with Deputy Patricia Dibble leading the investigation for the sheriff's office.
Bids opened for three four door sedans to serve Shafter and Arvin High Schools and the district buildings and grounds department at the Kern County Union High School District board meeting. One sedan is designated for Shafter High School per automotive specialists Harold Pauley and Harry Drenan.
The Orthodox Missionary Baptist Church will start the second and final week of singing and piano classes led by Frank Stamp of Dallas and his wife. Rev. Sam Wilcoxen noted strong attendance for voice and piano instruction, with the Stamps of Stamp Music Company inviting the public to attend without obligation.
Burial occurred Saturday July 16 in Shafter Cemetery for Launda Veach who died July 13 at Kern General Hospital. Veach, aged 75, moved to Shafter about 14 years ago and was cared for by her sons. Funeral services were in Flickinger-Janzen Mortuary with Rev Gordon Jans officiating. Arrangements by Flickinger-Janzen Funeral Home. Survivors include sons Ernest John George Robert David Milas Willie Albert of Shafter and Clarence LeRoy Veach of Martinez California.
The weather note mentions dust storms possibly from Wasco area and a Shafter observation. It forecasts light dust particles at sundown and continues with below normal temperatures likely in the mid to upper 90s.
Shafter's Boy Scout troop No. 53 met in the County park on a Wednesday evening. The gathering featured swimming and refreshments with no business agenda aside from a planned fall rummage sale to boost finances. Scouts Leroy Moser, Eddy Westbrook, Bobby Reives, Wilbur Stocker, Max Tudor, John Newton, Jackie Kirkham, Harold Gaede and Lloyd Kilgore attended, led by Scoutmaster Kenneth Pipkin.

After three years of effort, Shafter aims to receive city delivery and local carrier service. Postmaster Guenther and inspectors confirmed city population surpasses the minimum 2500 for local delivery. Assistant Postmaster General Burkes asked for space and equipment, with residents urged to display correct street numbers and box locations. Temporary carriers will work while civil service exams are arranged, likely within sixty days.
Rotary members enjoyed two color films on local Shafter events and a Yosemite reel at Ca nelo lunch. Captain Vernon Pierce chaired the program and presented clips on the May Potato Festival and the Sprouse Reitz Justesen fire, with the Yosemite showcase highlighting the famed national park.
A. C. Heflin, 21, Shafter, was badly hurt in a two-car crash on Highway 99 near Delano on Monday. His two passengers Albert Delby, 24, and Floyd Stubblefield, : Wasco, suffered multiple lacerations but were in good condition at Kern General Hospital. The other driver Carl Ross, Berkeley, and passenger Dee Etheridge, 36, were treated and released.
Constable Blake Witcher has purchased the former Capp home at 225 Orange Avenue and will move in with his family at the end of the week.
After the Sprouse Reitz and Justesen fire, workmen begin constructing two ultramodern buildings to replace the damaged site. The new facilities will be 140 by 50 feet and 130 by 50 feet, doubling the former lengths, with fluorescent slimline lighting and a retenanted lessee.
Rolf Jacobsen Jr longtime leader of Shafter Troop 53 and Huntington Lake summer camp organizer for 1950 has been honored for his service. The announcement notes his role as scout official and camp leader this season.
