Construction permits in Shafter show a surging start to 1968 with $525,908 in valuations by April 30, nearly double 1957’s for the same period. April leads with $168,560, and officials note two new homes among the permits as warm weather boosts activity despite a wet winter.

Letters from community groups will be bound for a presentation, and Kelly will become an honorary commodore of Lake Isabella for aiding State recreation facilities in the Kern River Valley. The Shafter Public Utilities District canceled a May 20 regular election after no other candidates filed for the seat held by Glenn O Nay. Nay, serving 18 years, was up for reelection but the deadline passed with only Nay as a candidate. The board asked county supervisors to reappoint him. Nay was elected in 1940 and has led the district as president since then.

The Shafter Community Chest plans dissolution after 12 years as a fundraising body. President Rev. Paul Edward Babbitt and the board say the Chest failed to meet its purpose, with last drive under half of its goal. Local groups like Boy Scouts Camp Fire Girls Salvation Army Recreation Commission relied on its funds.
Lonnie Heath of the Bakersfield Rescue Mission will speak at a Shafter Christian Business Men's Committee meeting tomorrow noon at Memorial Hall. A luncheon will be served and invited guests may attend.
Kern county Union High School district seeks a 9 million bond to fund expansion through 1963-64. Voters at Shafter High School room 2 will cast ballots next Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to approve classrooms and shop facilities due to rapid enrollment growth from 470 in 1947 to over 850 last fall.
Regulations for the 1958 crop of California Long White potatoes set May 1 as the maturity date and establish minimum grades. W C Jacobsen directs the agriculture department. The board adjusts size, maturity and appearance annually. Prices held firm around 3.25 to 3.35 per hundredweight for USIA shipments.
Hundreds of parents visited Richland School during Public Schools Week. On Monday and Thursday visitors toured the Intermediate Upper Grade and Primary buildings and met teachers and staff. More than 800 people were served at the Richland Cafeteria before tours.
Shafter Kiwanis hosts Harlin Wilson to discuss a little bit of Shakespeare today. Joe Frizzell serves as program chairman for the event in the local club meeting.
Shafter High School will stage its annual Spring Band Concert on May 2 at 8 p.m. in the school auditorium under band instructor Larry Weiss. The program blends classical pieces including Tac’s Sixth Symphony Pathetique movements with show tunes from The King and I and music from Bridge on the River Kwai. Tickets are sold by band members or at the door, 50 cents adults and 25 cents for elementary students, with proceeds added to the band uniform fund. The 56 member ensemble is among the school's oldest bands and previously performed with the Kern County Honor Band.
A 90 year old Phoenix man, Jesse Edwards, took a car from a Shafter dealer for a test drive, fled to Riverside, and was arrested in Arlington after police tied him to a stolen vehicle. Riverside and Shafter intend to file charges.
The public is invited to an open house Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Shafter Motel to inspect new room units, the pool, and the lobby as phase two remodeling progresses. Proprietor Ralph Boel notes a planned dining room banquet area and coffee shop remodel with completion targeted for September 1. August closure for coffee shop. The Shafter High classified staff honored custodian Henry Janzen with a farewell party. Janzen, employed since 1928, has served under eight principals and logged extensive bus miles. He retires Thursday, May 1, after a long career beginning when the school had only four classrooms and 59 students.
Herbert Hill a 24 year old of Shafter was fined 75 dollars after pleading guilty to contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He and an 18 year old companion were arrested Monday night while drinking in Hill's car. The minor was fined 25 dollars.
Louis A. Johnson pleaded guilty before Judge L. J. Woodard for speeding on Highway 99 at 105 mph. He was arrested by the highway patrol and sentenced to 20 days in the county jail after being unable to pay a $105 fine.
The Shafter High School recognizes 45 outstanding students from seventh and eighth grade Lerdo schools at a banquet event. Names and achievements are celebrated as part of the honors recognition.
SWID completed and water deliveries under way in Shafter Wasco areas as districts brace for May demand. 1958 seen as strong water year with Friant Kern Canal operation. emphasis on maximum use of supplemental water and groundwater building for dry years. A May recognition event for top Shafter High students will feature parchment scrolls signed by the mayor at Shafter Memorial Hall with speakers from Dr Ruben Mettler among participating clubs and organizations.
The largest touring circus, under American Legion sponsorship, will perform in Shafter on May 30 at the 20 acre A. R. Duren property on West Lerdo Avenue. Claude Camp, commander, says afternoon and night shows will feature wild animals including giraffes hippos rhinos elephants lions and tigers. Arthur W. Miller confirms preparations for the visit expected to draw crowds from a 35 mile radius, with Ringling size distinctions noted. Approval for using the Duran tract within city limits was granted by the council last night.
Shafter hosts Wasco Tigers Friday in a South Sequoia League baseball clash. The Generals sit 2 5 in SSL play after two losses last week to Maricopa and Garces, with wins over McFarland and South High. Bucks beat South Freshman 12 2 to end season. Nichols pitched all nine for the win.
Bakersfield College chapter of the AAUP sponsors a free piano recital by Dr. Robert Haag of Shafter in the College Theater on Saturday evening May 3 at 8 30. He will perform Beethoven last three piano sonatas. Haag is a former Bakersfield College student who completed music studies at El Camino College Los Angeles. Public invited.
