The 45 top Shafter district students were announced by chairman William Kendrick for a May 15 banquet at Shafter Memorial Hall. A parchment certificate signed by the mayor and Chamber president Dr Ruben Metter will be awarded, with speaker duties by a local Shafter High graduate in missile development. Tickets are in high demand and available from pre service groups or the Chamber on Central Avenue.

Funeral Services for Mrs. McCaslin Held at Armstrong Mortuary
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. at Armstrong Mortuary for Rose Etta McCaslin 72 of 707 Mayer Lane who died April 30 in a Bakersfield hospital. Jewel Rose officiated. Survivors include her mother Harritt Shockey of Oklahoma sons William David Butler of Virginia and daughters Violet Bonds Cuma Vowell Estellene Ashbaugh Janita Banks Bethel Kelley with many siblings and 21 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.

May Dollar Days Set For May 29 And 31 In Shafter
Merchants Division of the Shafter Chamber of Commerce decided to hold May Dollar Days on Thursday May 29 and Saturday May 31. Stores will close Memorial Day May 30, shifting the month end sale to Thursday and Saturday. Advertising will run in the May 28 Shafter Press. SHS Band Delivers Spring Concert Highlights
Shafter High School presented its annual spring band concert on May 2 featuring works by Richard Wagner and Rogers and Hammerstein. The 56 member concert band, directed by Larry Weiss, received praise from Principal Arthur Johnson and awarded band letters to members meeting four semester enrollments and a B average. Shafter High School senior Louise Fuller received the best supporting actress trophy at the Twelfth Annual One Act Drama Festival held in Bakersfield. The event, staged in three sections across Shafter High, East High, and Bakersfield College from April 19 to 26, featured Shafter High’s production Heat Lightning with Louise Fuller, Tommy Richards, and Danny Simpson, directed by Mrs. Milliken.

More than 125 potato growers and dealers are set for a May 14 field day at Shafter hosted by the Kern County Seed Potato Growers Association and UC Agricultural Extension. 20 30 Club Presents Boxley and Marie in Magic Show

Widening of Shafter Avenue to Start July First
Shafter avenue will be widened from 40 to 48 feet in a summer street project approved by the city council. The $21,000 cost includes $14,000 from the gas tax fund with the remainder from council appropriations. Work between Five Points and Central Valley highway is slated to begin July 1.

Sewers Hooked Up in Newly Annexed Woodland Tract
