The office will remain in service probably until December 31.
The May 15 banquet at Shafter Memorial Hall will honor Dr. Mettler a Shafter High School alum and Ramo-Wooldridge executive involved in missile component research. The event is organized by a 12 member service-club planning committee led by William Kendrick with participation from local clubs and PTA groups.
A sharp weekly fall in potato prices worries growers as the Long White harvest nears. Prices slid from over 8 to 3.25 and 0.50 per cwt while winter potatoes sold higher than some spring Edison shipments. Farmers expect May regulations to lift quality and prices, with harvests slated to begin around May 15 in Shafter and labor demand rising near Wasco.

Kern County Union High School and Junior College District voters will decide May 6 on a 9 million dollar bond to fund new classrooms and facilities through 1963-64. The plan includes five classrooms and a shop at Shafter High School and a new high school in the Bakersfield area. The bond would be repaid over ten years with about 24 cents per $100 assessed value, about three cents daily for the average homeowner. District Superintendent T L McCuen cites continued enrollment growth driven by birth rates, noting Kern County has produced over 7,000 births annually since 1940s and that 24,920 births between 1946-49 will shape 1963-64 enrollment.
Shafter’s new Dari Delite drive-in is nearly complete owner Charles Hammes says. The facility on Central Valley highway south of Lerdo will offer quick sandwiches hot dogs hamburgers and tacos along with economical refreshments.

A men’s softball league may also be organized this year with a junior baseball meeting planned later.
Two boys aged 11 and 12 were arrested for starting a Wednesday fire at the Shafter gin of the Coberly West company. Police Chief John Reily said the pair admitted setting the blaze after ditching school. damage was about $1000 to burlap bags and loose cotton.
The government will again seek bids for the Kern Homes housing project east of Shafter on the Lerdo highway. Sealed bids are due in San Francisco by 3 p.m. April 28 for the 20 acre development with an annual income of about 40 thousand dollars.
Jesse Melton of Sunnyvale received 95 days in county jail for a second offense of driving an automobile while intoxicated. Judge L. J. Woodard pronounced the sentence after Melton was arrested by the highway patrol last week on Highway 99.
A Shafter High School PTA barbecue is set for April 29 from 5 30 to 7 30 pm. Tickets fund a bar fund and a senior scholarship for future teachers. Guided tours will be offered with California Scholarship Federation members as guides and Horizon Club volunteers organizing a cake walk. The event features demonstrations by ten departments, art exhibit by the art club, and music by the school musicians.
