Fire at O'Brien Stables Destroys Hay Stack and Causes Losses
A blaze at the Joe O'Brien Stables on East Lerdo Highway near Shafter destroyed 200 to 250 tons of alfalfa hay and straw with estimated damages of 4 000 to 5 000 dollars. Firemen fought the flames for over 12 hours from 5 43 p m, with help from Shafter and Kern County crews. About 16 horses were moved to safety and the stable itself was not damaged beyond the hay stack.

Shafter May Be Site Of New Starch Plant
The city council heard Western Polymer Inc outline plans to build a starch and cattle feed plant in Shafter. The proposal includes a 50 by 100 foot steel building with a 50 by 100 foot storage slab for potatoes on a 1/2 acre site near Shafter Tree 3.7 The project would hire a number of workers and impact the local economy. Temperatures Stay Cold in Shafter Area Weather Review
Farmers in Shafter report March like conditions with a 36 degree overnight low on April 22 and daytime readings mainly in the 60s and 70s. The only near seasonal spike came April 25 reaching 80 while soil temps ranged from 54 to 64 across April 21 to 26 at the U S Cotton Research Station in Shafter.

Wilmer Bill Hildebrand, a Shafter city council member since 1965, was elected mayor at the council’s annual reorganization Tuesday night April 21. He will serve a one year term succeeding Jay C. Atkinson who did not seek re election. J M Bill Banks was chosen to join the council replacing Peratro and Crys in the reorganizing vote.
