In a village night class dozens join a square dancing revival with dancers twice as old yet nimble. A Pan American Auditorium tournament in Los Angeles drew thousands, signaling a nationwide trend toward neighborly recreation as Americans seek sociable, group activities amid lonesomeness and modern strain.
Leslie L. Robinson Post 213 American Legion will meet Monday night May 2 at 8 in the Woman's Club House for nominations of nine officers and an executive board. Lee Thomas says election will be May 16. Reports on Memorial Day Potato Festival barbecue and Veterans War Memorial Building plans will be presented. Members are reminded to pay current dues to participate and a social hour with refreshments follows.
Shafter Chamber of Commerce will resume its regular weekly meeting this Friday at 12 noon at the Cawelo Motel. Last week’s session was combined with Kern County Chamber of Commerce in a joint meeting, and president Bill Stoller urges a full turnout.
Ticket sales mount for the 20 30 City annual pre harvest dance at the Woman's Club House on May 7. White team leads blue in a hot fund raising contest, with Al Suckut and Dave Champ son as captains. Proceeds fund the children's Christmas party during the holidays. Perry F. Johnson’s Bakersfield band plays 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. A refreshment stand offers hot dogs and drinks.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday for Karen LaVerne Lewis who died shortly after birth. Rev. B. E. Andrews officiated at the graveside in Shafter Cemetery. Burial followed at Kern General Hospital where the infant was born to Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence T. Lewis and siblings James Lawrence Ronald Dale and Rosemary Lewis attended.
At the Bakersfield spring meeting of the Wasco Shafter association Irvin E. Fike Wilbur Stocker and W H Hitchcock spoke as Norman H Holt reported ongoing difficulties in completing the Central Valley Highway The main hurdle is a 20 foot right of way needed between Shafter and Rosedale Kern County has 60 foot but more is required Supervisor Barney Barnes pledged aid State Highway Engineer Earl Scott said an underpass at Kimberlina road could advance if highway revenue stays strong The group doubted the Rosedale to Shafter stretch will join the state highway system soon
The Bible Institute of Los Angeles presents the Laudisti Choir in a Tuesday evening concert at the Mennonite Church in Shafter corner of California and Kern. The 50-voice ensemble in maroon and gold robes offers four six and eight part singing with evangelical themes. directed by Eva Margaret Tovey.
Turner Dunkin of South Shafter died yesterday at 71. Services set for 2:30 p.m. at Pentecostal Church of God with Rev. E. L. Bradhurst. burial in Shafter Cemetery. Born January 19, 1879 in Dyersburg Tennessee. Survived by widow Maudie and three sons Odell J T and Edgar of Shafter and daughter Flossie Louise Smith of Shafter.
Rev. Oscar Stern and Rev. Chas Haimovitz will star in a dramatized sermon titled Jesus On Trial at 7 30 p.m. Sunday at Shafter Pentecostal Church of God on Shafter Avenue. Stern acts as Prosecuting attorney and Haimovitz as Defense attorney in a courtroom style program.
Rolf Jacobsen Jr is recovering well after an emergency appendectomy performed Wednesday evening at a Bakersfield hospital He is expected to return home next week and resume normal activities once recovered
Shafter High School hosts its annual Senior Carnival on the football field beginning at 2:00 p.m. Student groups organize concessions and activities including snow cones cake sale cake walk hot dogs candy and ice cream games rides and raffles with a dunking machine and an old Ford raffle.
Local police reports show a week of alcohol related arrests. Basil West 59 Eric J Rogers 65 and Adolf P Schwartz 60 faced fines and jail when booked Sunday. Saturday arrests included David Veach 47 with 50 fine and 60 day suspended sentence and Allen G Brock 64 with 25 fine and 30 days.
A 15000 bank addition project began this week at the Bank of America branch. E K Grant, county building inspector, says the 25 by 52 foot structure will nearly double the size of the bank and connect to the existing building facing Central Avenue. The west walk is removed and the plan preserves brick exterior design. Construction started Monday and will expand room and facilities for customers.
An unidentified man broke into the Elmer Isaac residence 20 miles south of town on Sunday night. Mrs. Isaac was knocked down and bruised as the intruder struck her head before fleeing. Isaac arrived shortly after with local law officers Blake Witcher Deputy Constable Jack Harris Officer Ned Jenner and Police Commissioner Frank Russell leading the investigation.
Curtis Benjamin Bowie is jailed awaiting trial after a Sunday night incident at Central Hardware. He faces charges for failure to register as an ex convict, petty theft, and related investigations. Officers recovered a Hy Standard 22 automatic and ammunition connected to Frank Russell Mfg Co. case.
Glider pilots plan a two weekend Western National Soaring Contest during the Shafter Potato Festival in May. Major figures Bud Kimble Paul McCrady Vic Sadneck and Dick Lyon headline along with record attempts and stunt displays at Shafter Airport. Tickets available at local shops.
The Kern County Potato Growers association held its annual dinner meeting Tuesday night at Motel Cawelo. In the business session the large group opposed all federal controls on the potato industry but recommended they be retained until 1950. Active members include Clarence Neuman of Shafter and Greg Malory, vice-president of the association.
The Shafter Branch Library concluded a two week exhibition listing 13 winning exhibits and one professional work. Winners include works in oil, watercolor, charcoal, chalk and pastel plus an ink drawing on scratch board. The 13 advancing pieces travel to Bakersfield for county finals. A. W. Eckman oversaw the preliminaries and urged owners to collect their entries.

Kern County Seed Potato Association held its annual Field Day at Shafter High School observing test plots of 116 seed types from across the nation. The group then convened at Cawelo for a luncheon, followed by the annual business session and officer election.
Shafter Rotarians heard Jay E. Miller of B. F. Goodrich describe a puncture sealing tubeless tire set for a 1949 debut. He noted cold rubber advances, tire wear, and ongoing tests on trucks taxis fleets and farm equipment. J C Hedges introduced the speaker and Dave Fleming attended as guest.
Earl Unruh, injured in the butane blast at the Shafter Sewage disposal plant that killed Ivan Stone, is recovering well and will return to his Shafter home from Mercy Hospital this weekend. Doctors report 35 percent burns are clearing, with no major disfigurement expected, and he will resume his position as Superintendent of the Shafter Public Utility District after several weeks of convalescence.
Dan Sharp of Sharp's Studio & Camera Shop appointed official photographer for the Potato Festival. He brings in former employee Harry Wood from Bakersfield to serve as festival photographer with many years of photographic experience.
