Local man held for murder attempt near Tupman
William A. Dowell 28 of North Shafter was jailed in Bakersfield on an attempted murder charge after allegedly drowning his wife Colana Ann 21 during a violent dispute near Tupman. The incident ended when Dowell was restrained and later treated for a cut arm at a Taft hospital.

Oxygen Given to South Shafter Resident
Virgil Barfield, 40, of the South Shafter Labor Camp, was brought to Shafter Fire Station by friends Tuesday morning and given oxygen from a resuscitator for thirty minutes. He was treated for bronchial asthma and released to recover at home. The Shafter Volunteer crew assisted by the county responders.
