The Golden Gloves boxing tournament at Shafter High School is set for Monday May 12 with preliminaries the week prior and finals that night. About five to six entrants are expected per weight division, with Donald Scott the only returning former winner. Mr and Mrs Robert LeDoux welcome a baby boy born April 25 at Mercy Hospital Bakersfield weighing 6 pounds 6 1/2 ounces. He is named Robert E Junior. Mother and child are progressing nicely.
Shafter veterans needing housing must sign within two or three days to help Kern County Housing Authority estimate demand for Minter Field veteran units. Bona fide applications are available at the Shafter Press office or Jack Hare’s office at Central and Santa Fe, to secure state funds for remodeling and relief from local housing shortage.
Townwide jubilee marks four decades with a Saturday parade at 10 a.m. featuring regional floats, a 2 p.m. rodeo starring Jimmy Wakely Gene Gray Dixie Gray and Tex Cooper, and an outdoor dance at night. Sunday hosts a major air show at Wasco airport from 2 to 4 p.m. with Sammy Mason and the Hollywood Hawks, followed by a 1947 Ford giveaway by the Wasco Chamber. Tickets available in Shafter at multiple local outlets.
Final plans are made for tonight's Kiwanis club ladies night at the Cawelo Motel starting at 8 p.m. Reverend Hollister B. Miller, pastor of the First Christian Church in Bakersfield, will be guest speaker. Shafter Kiwanians and their wives, plus guests and visiting members from other clubs, will attend.
Shafter Farm Center hosts a 8:00 p.m. meeting at Richland Cafeteria with speakers George Harrison on cotton seed John J. Peters on the recent potato marketing meeting and Dorothy Wilkinson from the County Agriculture Home Making Department. Musical numbers and movies are planned.
The Dr. Morris Mosquito Abatement District operates a power sprayer along with extended funds from the State Public Health Department to curb malaria like Encephalitis mosquitoes. Key breeding sites include open cess pools and standing water in home drainage gutters and street basins. Continuous patrol and community cooperation are urged to eliminate all standing water and breeding locations in Shafter for a successful season.
The Shafter high tennis team travels to Wasco Friday to face the Wasco squad in a key league match. Shafter has one loss to Bakersfield high and another to East Bakersfield, with a 3-3 tie against East high later. The team won the Sierra league meet 3-2 last Saturday and will enter the county tourney at Jastro Park in Bakersfield.
A large crowd attended the Saturday teen-age dance at the Woman's Clubhouse with 81 admissions reported. Local American Legion post supplied music and soft drinks while Legion Auxiliary and Women's Club members served as chaperones. Regular dances are planned every two weeks, now with active Legion participation.
An all day trap event hosted by the Rifle Club takes place Sunday starting at 9:00 a.m. at the Shafter airport four miles south. Lunch coffee and cold drinks will be served.
The Kern County Tuberculosis Health Association moved its 70 mm portable X-Ray unit from Shafter to McFarland last week, screening 534 residents. The unit then traveled to Wasco for free X rays Friday afternoon and all day Saturday.
Mr and Mrs A B Neufeld announce their daughter Elsie to Reuben Foth of Fresno. May 9 is set for the wedding at the Mennonite Brethren Church.
The Press offers premiums for boys and girls in Shafter who renew or start new subscriptions. One year brings a Wilson softball worth 2.25, and three subscriptions earn roller skates valued at 4.75. Also listed are prizes like a Wilson bat, tennis racquet, bicycle, and a radio, with values and required numbers of subscriptions.
A new radio repair shop opened in Shafter last week by Buel Mouser located in the Shafter Car & Home Supply Goodyears store at 511 East Central Ave. Mouser, a Shafter native and Navy trained electronics specialist, offers home and auto radio repairs and new radio sales from his setup in the store.
John Nickel of Shafter High School ranked in the upper twenty percent among 1849 competitors from 274 California high schools for Pepsi-Cola four year scholarships. Teammates Virlin Perry and Bob Teeters also placed well among the top scorers.
Dan Loewen and his brother C. L. Loewen of Lodi fished several days on the San Joaquin and Sacramento rivers from Monday to Thursday and caught 21 striped bass.
East Bakersfield wins the varsity division 82 to 51 as Wasco claims B and C class titles. Noldon of Wasco breaks Kern County B high jump mark at 6 ft 1/8 in. Steele of East Bakersfield sweeps A sprints. Wasco sprinters excel in C and relays. Other teams from Shafter Tehachapi and McFarland place 3rd to 5th.
Sixteen groups prepare for Shafter High School senior carnival this Thursday afternoon and evening. Dismissal at noon, booths and side-shows including a Model T prize from Hi Y Club, cake grab dog candy peanuts popcorn hot dogs ice cream stands, and games like ring toss weight guessing and nail driving. Townspeople welcome a large crowd to the event sponsored by the senior class to fund a school gift.
Mrs. Aurora Salazar of the South Shafter Farm Labor Supply Center boards a train toTexas City to be with her widowed daughter in law and grandchildren after the deadly gulf coast blast. Trenida Salazar was killed. his wife and two children were seriously hurt as hundreds died in the explosions. Friends raised over $145 to aid their escape and travel.
