A Shafter reader notes the town once moved rapidly but has lagged lately. The author urges a civic boost from local leaders to revive momentum and treat the community as a living, waking entity needing purposeful actions to accelerate growth.
Pat Kelly newly elected District Governor of Rotary International addressed Shafter Rotarians emphasizing a positive view of youth. He argued too much focus on youth shortcomings overlooks their fine capabilities and achievements. The event followed a Kern County radio system talk detailing county police and fire communications.
The Shafter Farm Center calls a regular meeting next Tuesday evening April 29 at the Richland School Cafeteria. Temporary chairman Harlan Wilson urges all farmers to attend to support continued meetings. George Harrison and John J. Peters are slated to speak on new cotton seed strains and the potato seed head marriage report.
The Central Valley Highway project moves ahead as Kern Tulare and Fresno counties plan bids for early units. Bids for the first six mile Kern unit from Wasco to Elmo are to open in May with further work set for July and October bidding in Fresno. County officials report signs and sections to be developed along the route.
Wasco plans a 40th birthday homecoming May 9 to 11 featuring a V F W dance a civic parade a barbecue a Wasco High School rodeo a breakfast flight and an air show Celebrity guests include Dorothea Kent Gene Gray and Allen Ross Over 200 horses and about 50 floats are slated for the parade Entries can be sent to the Wasco chamber at Box 85.
Shafter's 1947 potato season to start about May 5 with early sheds aiming May 1. Local digging likely from May 15 as warm weather continues. Acreage drops 30 percent under government allotment, but expected heavy yields may approach 1946 output. Kern County totals 32 percent below 1946 acreage, about 6600 acres above 500 acre baseline. Car shipments and minimum shipment weight adjustments noted for the season.
Shafter High School seniors announce a carnival planned for Thursday May 1 with all clubs participating. Twenty five percent of proceeds go to the seniors and the rest to the hosting group. Victor Bender chairs the event with a team including Mary Mouser Eugene Neufeld Bud Anderson Dixie Mathis Barbara Fox and Edna Rodgers.
Elliot J. Taylor, Kiwanis Lt. Governor for the district, spoke at the Shafter Kiwanis meeting at Cawelo Motel about the role of service clubs in modern life. He noted rapid social changes, growth in clubs with Kiwanis adding 15000 members, and the clubs’ fight against prejudice by recognizing all creeds and races.
Teen age dances for high school students planned by the American Legion committee and the Wednesday Afternoon Club. First event set for Saturday night at the women’s club with 8 to 11 pm hours and a 10 cent admission to fund future orchestras. Doctors Revell and ladies Brown Vannatta Lassiter assist. additional dances slated for May 10 and May 24 with possible summer events.
The Shafter 20 30 Club sponsors a Sunday baseball game at Richland Grammar School field West Lerdo between Shafter Merchants' Team and Wasco Team to aid the American Cancer Society fund drive. Admission is free. a collection supports cancer relief and research nationwide.
Tickets for Wasco's 40th anniversary celebration go on sale in Shafter for May 9 10 and 11. Purchases available at Shafter Motel Johnson Neuman Department Store Bill Browns liquor store and Bartons Shell Service Station. The events include an air show featuring Sammy Mason and Hollywood Hawks a F F A Rodeo headlined by Jimmy Wakely and Gene Gray and a parade starting at 10 am Saturday May 10 with Dixie Gray Tex Cooper and many others.
With summer softball near, lights will be available for practice starting next week. Teams must reserve per night by calling Roy Farrell at Richland School, phone 682, and indicate the desired night.
Kiwanis in Bakersfield invites members from nearby communities and their wives to a Tuesday evening event at the Cawelo Motel. Reverend Hollister B Miller of First Christian Church will be the featured speaker. The program plans include entertainment and a fried chicken dinner at 8 p.m. under Ray Rice's house reception committee.
A large crowd from Shafter and nearby communities visited the Shafter business district for the first of three April Thrift days sponsored by local merchants. A bigger turnout was expected today and again on Saturday to take advantage of outstanding bargains. Shoppers were urged to plan ahead to ensure they could find merchandise, with thousands of items on display as part of monthly events.
