Petition Threat Used in Tax Relief Demand
In Bakersfield last week the Kern County Property Owners Association pressured the Board of Supervisors with an initiative petition if they do not grant substantial property tax relief. KCPOA president Donald E. Hawkins urged a sweeping overhaul of all county departments and warned of costly legal remedies if demands are not met. The Kern County budget requests rise 18 percent from 67.5 million to 79.5 million plus about 1.2 million for Civil Service salary adjustments. Other speakers followed.

State Controller Flournoy reported a total 128 344858 distribution to cities and counties as an early vehicle license fee share. Kern County totals were 1146711 to cities and 546783 to the county with Bakersfield receiving 308536 based on a 68576 population. Wasco gained 32601 for 7246 residents. County supervisors heard cautions on 80 7 million in department requests and urged budget cuts to avoid higher taxes.
