Kern County’s 1966 crop report shows cotton no longer foremost in value, cattle lead with $65.6 million while cotton drops 32 percent. Potatoes plummet from $74.6 million to $31.8 million and 53,640 acres yield 864,630 tons, with prices falling from 83.72 to 36.32 per ton.
Howard K. Dickson and Selden Morley were inducted as Honorary members of the Shafter High School Future Farmers chapter at its annual dinner in Shafter Memorial Hall. The event honored farm youth with trophies for tractor driving and speech contests and noted local contest placements by chapter members.
Open house at Shafter High School and Richland Elementary during Public Schools Week April 24 28 invites the public to visit at any time. Principal Harold Corrie and Superintendent Bruce Crawford urge parents and citizens to observe classrooms talk with teachers and review facilities and instructional aids.
The article claims the Peace Demonstrations drew 100000 marchers in New York and 40000 in San Francisco despite bad weather. It asserts organizers included Communists and fellow travelers and accuses the protests of a hidden aim to cause US voters to quit fighting in Vietnam. A late write-in effort emerged Monday for one of two open Richland Board of Trustees seats. A district mailing urged voters to write in M. L. Whisler with an X next to the name, while incumbents Dr. Henry Voth and Fred Starrh remained in the race. Whisler is a production manager at a wholesale nursery firm.
The Bakersfield Californian announced Walter Kane will retire as publisher after 45 years with the paper, starting in 1924 as an advertising salesman. Donald Fritts named executive editor and his brother William Fritts as business manager, both Harrell family descendants. Further management changes expected.
California Department of Water Resources Director William R. Gianelli said the California Aqueduct will deliver water to Kern County next January as far south as check structures 2 1/2 in western Kern. He announced May 1968 deliveries will extend south to 7th Standard Road near Bel Ridge and Buena Vista Water Storage Districts, with state project water available to all agencies north of Buena Vista Pumping Plant in January 1970.
County supervisors oppose Assembly Bill 583 amendments that would remove the county reimbursement option in Medi Cal. They say the move would shift rising medical costs to counties as state costs balloon, with next year projected at forty four million dollars and higher in the future.
Arthur Plaza of 288 East Marengo reported to Shafter police that his home was ransacked on two consecutive days April 12 and 13. Bureau drawers were rummled but nothing appeared missing.
Elaine Beighle reports eggs thrown at her residence on Friday April 14. Egg shells remained on walls when she notified police.
Ruben Siemens of Maple was re-elected vice president of the California Association of Public Cemeteries at the annual Bakersfield convention. Fred Morrison of Palm Springs was named president and Dave Muller of Dixon as secretary-treasurer. Assemblyman Bill Ketcham spoke on legislative matters. Alen C. Brown of Madera Cemetery District was honored for service.
Richland trustees plan a meeting Monday evening May 1 at the town hall. The agenda includes routine municipal business and public comments.
