High School PTA Barbecue Expected to Draw 1000

The Bakersfield PTA barbecue, co chaired by Harlin Wilson and Bill Irvin, is set for next Thursday at 6 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. It funds a teacher scholarship and aids youth groups as about 1000 attendees are anticipated. A half hour program features teachers and student talent, with the pep band, a cake walk, and various sidelights.

Final Rites for Accident Victim in Texas

Charles Benjamin Paslay 35 of 206 Park Avenue Ford Texas died April 12 from injuries in an accident near Clayton New Mexico. Funeral was officiated by Sam Wilcoxon and held at Shafter Cemetery under Armstrong Mortuary direction. Mrs Paslay was born July 30 1920 in Mayetta Kansas and lived in Shafter Bakersfield area for 30 years. He worked with Wasco Pipe Concrete and Arvizu Concrete Pipe Hereford. A World War II Navy veteran. survivors include widow Melba L Paslay of Texas and son Kenneth L Paslay.

90th Birthday Observed For Mrs Anna Enns

In commemoration of Mrs Anna Enns 90th birthday a ham dinner was hosted at Veterans Memorial Hall on April 15. The event was planned by her son John and his Santa Cruz wife and her daughter Mrs H J D Janzen of Shafter. Dinner at 1 00 p m followed by visiting with attendees listed including Mrs G C Fields Glenn Eymann Mr and Mrs Bob Der.

Mrs Frank Skidmore installed as president for 1956 57 replacing Mrs Paul Enns. Mental health chair man Mrs Paul Wilson officiated. Other officers include Mrs N R Boggs historian auditor Frank O Neill Jr treasurer secretary Murrell Swan corresponding secretary Leroy Janzen second vice president Bill Bayer first vice president. A second delegate to the state convention in May was approved with Mrs Bill Bayer and Frank H O Neill Jr to attend. Reports of officers and heads were given. N R Boggs and wife hosted the meeting.

Shafter High Baseball Teams Set Three-Game Week

Shafter high school baseball schedules three games in a week with Friday home vs McFarland, Saturday away vs Corcoran, and Tuesday makeup at Garces. The Tigers, still seeking their first league win, lost to Wasco 15 hits to six, with Wasco leading early and extending their lead.

Crackdown on Juveniles Hits Shafter Area

Kern county sheriff's office tightens curfew enforcement in Shafter with four juvenile arrests this week. In Bakerville, three Wasco youths were picked up for curfew violations, aiding recovery of 26 hub caps stolen Friday night. Juveniles found on streets after 10 pm may be detained unless returning from supervised events. Parents may be held responsible for underage drivers without licenses.

Kern Art Exhibit at Memorial Hall Weekend

The Kern County district art festival will be held at Memorial Hall this weekend with judging at 10 a.m. and show hours 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday. Community theater rebuilds and new rooms featured

Grover's Corners style town features a rebuilt building now valued at $22,000 without furnishings. Scouts Camp Fire Girls and Blue Birds use it daily with new green drapes and award panels. Stage Manager guides audience through scenes and intermission.

Funeral Rites Held Wednesday for T. J. Hance

Funeral services were held for Thomas Jefferson Hance 82 in Armstrong mortuary. He died Monday in Bakersfield after a short illness. Interment was in Shafter cemetery. Survived by wife, five sons A J and Charles, Oscar Edward and Thomas Ray, four daughters Viola Reed Audry Daniels Ethel Hensley and Mary Tripp, with relatives in Shafter Oklahoma Texas Oregon and Joplin Missouri.

Burglars Hit Cornet's 5 & 10 Store

Burglars broke into Cornet's 5 10 store last weekend and stole a small amount of change from the cash register. Manager H D McCormick reported the break in through a rear door glass. Officers Claude Mitchell and Glen Holt found the shattered glass and alerted the manager early Sunday morning.

Shafter Swimmers Fall Short To Taft In Close Meet

Shafter high school swimmers lost 44 43 to Taft in a division contest. Shafter B team fell 68 20 to Taft. Standout Shafter swimmers included Glen Putman Mickey Pearson Bruce Branner Bill Thompson. Shafter teams and girls team travel Thursday to Delano for a tournament with Wasco.

Campaign to recruit more Shafter police and Kern reserves

A program starts April 26 at Shafter High School led by Lt William Purdie from the sheriff's office to train new and current auxiliary officers. Classes run seven Thursday nights 7 30 to 10 30 in Room 17 to teach law enforcement procedures. Crane Crandall veteran dies in Rio Bravo accident

Chan ning L Crandall 38 of 320 Cross street died April 12 at the pumping plant in Rio Bravo of the Superior Oil after a long military career. He served in Okinawa earning a special citation from Major General M L Smith and participated in campaigns across the Pacific. He was born November 7 1917 in Oklahoma and lived in Shafter 35 years. Survived by his widow Vivian mother Gladys Crandall Pixley sister Mary J Howell Pixley and other relatives. Armstrong Mortuary handled arrangements.

Engineer Outlines CVH Road Plans at Dinner Meeting

Fresno district engineer W L Welch spoke to the Cenpf Valley Highway Association last night detailing the 1956 57 budget funds for the project and plans to widen rights of way to allow two additional lanes in the future. Hemingson Named Chairman for Cotton Week in Shafter

A. J. Heming son, Shafter businessman, was named chairman of a committee to promote national cotton week in Shafter from May 14 to 19. The appointment was announced by Merton Wiedmann, president of the Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. Hemingson will form his committee after a conference with the merchants division of the chamber to plan a salute to cotton as a basic industry in the Shafter area.
