Latta Stroke Halts Shafter Historical Society Meeting
About 200 attended the Shafter Historical Society general meeting at the Veterans Hall where guest speaker Frank Latta had a mild stroke two days earlier. Stand-in speakers Don Latta Mona Olsen and Bill Horst updated members on the depot project and Latta’s historical work while pledges sought donations to finish restorations set for October 11 1980.

Bank of America economist forecasts sharp mortgage drop in 1980
Bank of America economist Eric Thor warns real estate lending and mortgage originations will fall in 1980 due to high interest rates, rising building costs, and tighter credit. He pegs 1980 U.S. originations down about 28 percent from 1979 with California housing starts dropping around 28 percent and nationwide starts down roughly 32 percent from 1979.
