Richland teachers ratify contract at special meeting
The Richland Board of Trustees and the Richland Teachers Association ratified a 1979 80 to 1980 81 contract at a special meeting. Highlights include a 7 percent raise retroactive to March 1 1980 a 500 lump sum payment and a 72 percent increase for 1980 81. The agreement sets 179 teaching days returning staff 180 for new staff 176 student instruction days and a 30 1 student teacher ratio with class size goals 28 K 6 and 29 7 8. If unresolved disputes go to advisory arbitration with possible court appeal.

Battery charge filed after Shafter youth fight
In Shafter on Monday April 14 a fight at Budget Food Mart led Janie Link to sign a citizen's complaint against Joe Jones 18 for battery against a juvenile who suffered a fractured nose a concussion and bruises and was treated at Wasco emergency hospital with planned plastic surgery. Additional arrests followed including Mary Jane Foote 19 for battery resisting arrest and minor in bar, Gary Cross for public drunk with a related theft warrant, Richard Valladolid for warrants totaling 1800 dollars, and Daniel Perales for drinking on the street. Kern deputies recovered stolen engines from Oxy Chem and a stolen car tied to Custome Leasing.
