Winners from grades seven to 12 are chosen for academic achievement this year. Final Rites Held For Allen Smith
Funeral services were held Saturday at the First Baptist Church for Allen F. Smith 58 of Shafter who died April 9 after a long illness. Rev Melvin Krug officiated with interment in Shafter Cemetery. He was born in Oklahoma on September 23 1899 and survived by his widow Mae and four children plus two sisters and four grandchildren. Armstrong Mortuary handled arrangements.

Plans Announced For Public School Week In Richland
The Richland School District announces Public School Week from April 21 to 25 with open house in the Intermediate Upper and Primary buildings. On April 21 parents tour classrooms 8:30 p.m. and a school supper runs 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Prices are 50 cents for adults and 30 cents for children 14 and under. Tuesday features Spring Concerts at 7:30 p.m. with the Richland Orchestra and Glee clubs.

Builders Required To Take Out City Licenses for Work
The Shafter City Council approved a rule requiring all contractors performing construction in the city to obtain business licenses. The council also empowered the city tax collector to issue permits and collect fees for building, plumbing, and wiring work, consolidating licensing and permitting under one official. Previously building permits were issued and fees collected by the building inspector. The change addresses concerns about out of town builders operating without licenses and local builders paying fees.
