Shafter veterans plan a special toast for 1st Sergeant Baltazar M Lopez who will serve as grand marshal of the sixth annual Shafter Potato and Cotton Festival parade on May 16. Lopez, awarded the Silver Star for actions in Korea, is on leave from the Army and leads a platoon at Hill 745 during the Korean conflict. He is currently with the Army Engineer Construction Battalion at Camp Deser Rock Nevada and helped cover the west hill in a critical assault under heavy fire.
