Mayor Phil Channeson issues a proclamation for April 25 and 26 as Shafter Clean-Up Days. City trucks will haul away rubbish from yards and vacant lots as civic groups join the effort to beautify the town and cut fire risk amid growing population and new construction.
Construction of the Superior Union Oil absorption plant in the Shafter oil field progresses rapidly with carloads of pipe condensers and machinery unloaded at the Santa Fe yards. A single piece 80 feet long eight feet in diameter weighs 27 tons and requires a special trailer and truck to move to the site.
A farmer, J. E. Klassen, reports a week of hens laying football shaped eggs. He brought two to The Press office, noting he has about 100 hens and cannot identify which bird laid the balls.
Mayor Phil Channenon urges all residents and organizations to join April 25 and 26 Clean-Up Days in Shafter. The campaign aims to improve appearance and reduce fire hazards by cleaning yards alleys and vacant lots and uniting for a cleaner safer town.
Clarence A. Campbell, manager for the King Lumber Company at Wasco, announces his candidacy for Kern County Clerk. Local supporters across Delano, Wasco, Shafter, Bakersfield, and Taft praise his qualifications and pledge an economical, county-focused administration. Campbell, a 30-year Kern resident and former Shafter leader, emphasizes reducing costs and serving Kern County taxpayers.
Frank Shaw, who assumed duties as city clerk Monday evening, announces headquarters at city hall and hours from 9 to 2 daily, except Sunday.
Two more wells join the highlights in the Shafter oil field last week. Wagner No. 2 in Section 35-28-25 is flowing at 1109 barrels of 37.6 gravity from a depth of 11 499 feet. Ruhl No. 1, the mystery no dope well south of Seventh Standard road, draws scarce information but is described as potentially sensational.
Mayor Channeson was unanimously reelected by the Shafter city council after the official canvass of last week's general election. Four-year terms were set for Channeson and Councilman Midgley, two-year terms for Councilmen Fair Nay and Strom, and four-year terms for Frank Shaw city clerk and F. L. Hudson city treasurer. Ray Dye administered the oath to Shaw. The next regular meeting is scheduled for next Monday evening.

The Kern County Union High School district has authorized a combined gymnasium and auditorium at Shafter High. Bids are expected in July, with plans by Bakersfield architects Symes and Willard. The project will join existing dressing rooms into one building, providing a long sought assembly space.
Twelve Shafter men earned American National Red Cross first aid certificates after completing a course sponsored by the Shafter Volunteer Fire Department at Shafter High School. Instructor Charles H. Phillips of Bakersfield delivered the certificates to Oliver Sly Eddie F. Bender Arthur J. Craig Johnny G. Gaede George H. Gaede Jack Hare Dan L. Lowen Jake Neu feld J A Roscamp Orval Schenkosky Chas A Skaggs and C J Vignolo.
Shafter will gain direct air mail service with a May 19 flight. A plane will stop at the Shafter airport to collect a mail sack and fly to Bakersfield for onward transport. Local civic groups expect a large cargo of mail and plans include ad printed envelopes for Shafter. departure time to be announced with a ceremony.
Western Union opens a new office in the Santa Fe depot on Wednesday with Mr. Hardie in charge. The move supports increased potato shipping activity and sits in the depot’s newly remodeled section.
The annual state Sunday school convention for Mennonite Brethren churches will be held in the city this Saturday and Sunday, April 23 and 24, with more than 2,000 expected. Representatives from 11 churches including Shafter, Orland, Lodi, Winton, Bakersfield, Fairmead, Los Angeles, Rosedale, Dinuba M B, Dinuba Krimer M B and Reedley will participate.
The first car of 1938 potatoes left Shafter Monday evening at the Sahte Fe depot. Grown by H. F. Mettler on his Saco holdings east of Shafter, they were washed and packed at J. H. Maurer packing shed. Frost touched tops briefly but caused no lasting damage. shipments expected to rise toward mid June.
Shafter High School announces an Open House on Friday April 29 with tours of all departments for parents and friends. The event marks the first public viewing of the new classroom building and the central heating plant costing 10000. The program includes student displays in typing business forms shop farm mechanics chemistry home economics and a 8 pm Girls Glee Club concert. The 30 acre school farm will be open with stock judging in the evening.
A public hearing led by A. D. Hadley from the U S department of agriculture examined a nationwide potato marketing agreement. F R Wilcox of the AAA outlined purposes and a potential post hearing referendum among Kern county and other early potato states growers.
Harvesting of an 11 acre lettuce field on the F. W. Handel ranch nears completion after two to three weeks of daily cutting and packing. A roadside packing table was used for trimming and dry packing heads for shipment.
