In Shafter Justice Court Judge E. K. Grant announced new overload penalties on trucks. A charge of one cent per pound is applied for overloads, with a recent truck fined $181.50 for 18 150 pounds and other fines ranging from $10 upward.
H. W. Pat Kelly of Shafter was named District Governor of Rotary International District 106 at the Santa Barbara meeting. He succeeds Peter Peterson of Tracy and oversees 52 clubs across the San Joaquin Valley and adjacent counties.
Shafter faces a serious sewage problem as the State Sanitation and Health Department demands immediate action. An inspection found the plant's capacity overtaxed more than double with water systems near full pump capacity. City leaders and the Board of Directors discussed expanding the plant, adding wells, pumping facilities, water lines, and fire hydrants to support growth and future needs.
Fire destroyed Nickel Chevrolet Co. garage in Wasco, starting from oily sawdust ignited by sparks from a torch. The blaze raged nearly four hours, gutting equipment and building valued around 50 000 dollars. Firefighters from Shafter Wasco County and Wasco City battled flames amid smoke and water.
Eddie Stumpf Baseball Executive West Coast manager for the Cleveland Indians spoke at the Kiwanis luncheon at Cawelo Motel. He described the organization expanding to 17 club stations and the Bakersfield Indians as a California League Class C team. Other attendees included D R Hamilton from Lindsay and Dr J J Baerg, with Ray Kitts as program chairman. Attendance prize, a red tie, went to Jim Hahn.
Shafter Farm Center planning committee met to finalize details for the next regular meeting on Tuesday night April 29 at 8 p m. The meeting place and program are to be announced in next week’s Press. The organizing group gathered at Al Eckman’s home with members August Bender John DeVincenzo Otto Handel Johnny Shultz Harlan Wilson W H Hitchcock and Eckman.
Mrs Rolf Jacobsen was taken to San Joaquin hospital late yesterday afternoon after an illness with an exceedingly high fever failed to improve.
